Thank YOU!

We want to send a heartfelt thank you out to all of the people who made this episode and video happen! First, thank you to Producer Craig for always making sure we sound good, and for helping to host the game and keep things moving along! Second, thank you to Paul (aka Operaman) for always being the show’s #1 fan and supporter, and also for taking Liz’s niece out of the room so she wouldn’t be scarred for life!

Next, we of course want to take the ever talented Seale Adams for volunteering his time and abilities to take amazing video, both of this show and our Women in Podcasting panel. You are completely awesome!!

To our Houston-area podcast friends at Cult 45, Dogfin Studios, and Carla Sue Houston for being there to support us, as always! You guys are the best!

Thanks also to the University of Houston – Clear Lake’s The Signal for coming out to cover the event! This is Liz’s alma mater, so finding that they took an interest in our little dog and pony show was a delight! You can read more about that here: https://uhclthesignal.com/wordpress/2018/06/18/a-houston-natives-first-time-at-comicpalooza/

And finally, thank you to ALL of the strangers who came out to play the game with us and for being awesome participants! We couldn’t have done it without you! We were in a tough timeslot, and up against the Star Trek Q&A, so having a packed room was amazing!

Women in Podcasting panel at Comicpalooza 2018

VIDEO – Women in Podcasting Panel at Comicpalooza 2018

Hey there! We know that you heard us talk about the Women in Podcasting panel we hosted at Comicpalooza this year, but we didn’t use the audio for an actual podcast episode. That is because our amazing friend Seale Adams showed up to video the whole thing and put together a really slick piece of work! It is available on our Nerdy Bitches YouTube Page. We are also embedding the video here, but encourage you to go give it a thumbs up and subscribe to our page! We are looking to add even more content going forward!

You can find the other ladies on the panel at:

Enjoy the panel! If you have questions you would like for us to answer in future panels, please comment below.

Comicpalooza 2018 Wrap-Up

Episode 101 – Comicpalooza 2018 Wrap Up

In this episode, we briefly try to do our Comicpalooza 2018 Wrap Up, and fail miserably at the “brief” part! There was SO much going on, and we just couldn’t help ourselves!! So listen to us gush about the amazing time we had, all of our awesome panels, our friends, and did we mention the celebrities??

Comicpalooza 2018 Wrap-Up

Comicpalooza 2018 Wrap Up

We not-so-briefly go through each day of the convention and talk about the awesome panels we attended, the panels we hosted, and how much fun it was to finally see each other again since Heather moved away!

There are probably some really long tangents about Harry Potter meet-ups and other things, but the conversation was fun, so we left them in.

Quick Review

  • Thursday – Badge pick up, reuniting with our friends, and grabbing lunch
  • Friday – Matinee Hereos panel, Peter Mayhew (moderated by Brandon from Cult 45), Liz gushing about TALKING to Peter Mayhew, and a lot on our trivia show down game show with Cult 45 podcast. The live stream for that show is available here.

After recording with Shasie, Heather made it to the Cult 45 Podcast live show. Liz was late and missed it since the room was PACKED! As a small consolation, she did get to say hello to (and get a wave and hello in return from) Tom Holland. After that, we had our LIVE show, which you can find here: http://www.nerdybitches.com/episode-100-live-from-comicpalooza-with-cards-against-humanity/http://www.nerdybitches.com/episode-100-live-from-comicpalooza-with-cards-against-humanity/

  • Sunday: We had our Women in Podcasting panel, which we hosted. The panel included Mandy from CasterQuest, Miss Jenny Kelley, and Thirsty from Raging Nerds. It was a great panel, and we are looking forward to seeing the video captured by Seale when it is available!

Women in Podcasting panel

Now, we are exhausted! Heather is going out on assignment for a few weeks to a couple of other conventions. In the meantime, Liz will be joined by guest host Mandy until Heather is back! Look for those episodes coming soon!

Thanks again to the team at Comicpalooza for our third time as part of their official podcasting program. We have a great time every year, and this is definitely our favorite convention! We are already looking forward to next year!

Episode 100 – LIVE from Comicpalooza with Cards Against Humanity

It’s finally here!! In this episode, we are celebrating our 100th episode LIVE from Comicpalooza with Cards Against Humanity!! We also had some very special guests and listeners leave some awesome messages, and you will hear those throughout the live game play. Heather and Liz were back in the same state again, so it only made sense to make this milestone episode something special!

Live at Comicpalooza with Cards Against Humanity

Winner with runners-up

LIVE from Comicpalooza with Cards Against Humanity!

We may have stretched time a little to make this milestone happen when and how it did, but it was totally worth it! Our podcasting room was packed with people sitting along the walls just to watch. A big chunk of the audience played the game WITH us in a tournament-style show down to get to a single winner of our amazing Nerdy Bitches trophy (which is a female body building trophy, in actuality, but the caption on the trophy says it all!). And believe me, they WANTED this trophy. Our reigning champion from 2017 was there to defend his title, even though we told him we wouldn’t take away his trophy.

Who WOULDN’T want this little gem in their trophy case??

The game play was amazing, loud, and a great deal of fun, and we really hope you enjoy. Note: It has been edited to cut out the boring parts while we overexplain the modified rules, people are shuffling cards, and lining up. You are getting the solid action!

Shout Outs!

We put out an invitation via social media for anyone who wanted to send in a congratulations message, and we have included those soundbites and voicemail messages throughout the show. We love these folks and really appreciate them taking the time to send in a message! If they have a podcast, we are linking it below.

We want to extend a HUGE Thank You to everyone who has participated in making this 100th episode amazing!! Thank you to:

  • Producer Craig, for always making us sound like we know what we are doing!
  • OperaMan, for always being a supportive listener and one who provides us with great feedback.
  • Cult45 Podcast for being awesome brothers-in-arms to our show and to Brandon for acting as bouncer during the show when some idiots got a little rowdy!

And a GIGANTIC thank you to Seale Adams for coming all the way in just to film our little dog and pony show!! We cannot wait to share his videographic genius with all of you via our YouTube Channel when it is completed!

R to L: Heather, Seale, Liz  – Live from Comicpalooza with Cards Against Humanity

Thank you to all of our listeners for allowing us to hit this milestone in our podcasting careers. We are looking forward to many more and have some awesome things in the works, so stick around!!

Rate and Review

We are so grateful for anyone who leave a 5-star rating and review in Apple Podcasts. A word of warning – Apple does not allow “offensive language” in their reviews, so if you mention the name of the show, or bitches or whatever, it will eat the review and we will never know your lovely thoughts. I have found that just typing b*tches is more than sufficient to make it past the censors. We would love to hear from you!

xo,

Liz and Heather

Black Panther

Episode 99 – Black Panther

In this episode, Liz and Heather took a break from Comicpalooza to sit down with blogger and lifestyle guru, Shasie (Shasie’s World) to talk ALL about Black Panther! We will be focusing on the character of Black Panther, not just the stand-alone movie, so we will be discussing Captain America Civil War, Black Panther, and Avengers: Infinity War with SPOILERS all over the place. Also, please excuse the audio. When recording quickly on-the-go, we had a few slip-ups!

Black Panther

Black Panther

Again, SPOILERS! We sat down with Shasie at Comicpalooza to talk all about the character, Black Panther, and will crossover into the different movies he has been in. We jump right on in and talk about all of the crazy things that happen in all of the movies and what is going to happen during the next group of movies that we know are coming.

We love Black Panther. Period. When he pops up in Civil War in the chase of Winter Soldier, we were surprised and excited. We talk about villians, and how well Marvel is doing at bringing in villians who you can somewhat relate to and can feel (especially Killmonger).

We do jump around to talk about some of the rest of the MCU and had a great time.

We spend a good amount of time discussing this movie – all of our favorite parts, lines, and gaping plot holes. But we really do love it! The show is nearly as long as the movie!

Doctor Who Season 9

Just a note – This is actually our second recording, but we lost the first one, so just know, you missed the Oscar-worthy edition. But, this is finally our chance to get around to talking about Season 9 and how much we really enjoyed it… even Clara (who we typically hated)!!

We go through each of the two-fers in the season and then talk about the new writer and whomever the new Doctor might be. We loved that they brought back Missy for the first few episodes. She is a great villain and we love her.

Upcoming Book Club…

You’re Never Weird on the Internet (Almost) by Felicia Day!

Felicia will be at Comicpalooza this year, so we have our fingers crossed that we will get to meet her and maybe even get her on the podcast! So, get to reading! And feel free to tweet her and let her know to look for us!

Be The Match Booth at Comicpalooza

Be the Match swabs people for the National Bone Marrow Registry, and they will have a booth at Comicpalooza this year, and Liz wants YOU to get over there and swab to see if you could possibly be the match for 2 year old Roman. Episode 42 – Comicpalooza 2016

In this episode, Liz and Heather wrap up our coverage of Comicpalooza 2016. We are completely exhausted after the con, but had such an awesome time participating and being on the podcast program team this year!

Comicpalooza Podcast Program 2016

Wrap Up

  • We were invited by our friends at Sarah and Cassi’s Nerdy Adventure to participate in their Women in Podcasting panel Friday afternoon. This panel was so much fun! We worked with Sarah & Cassi, Jenny from I Love Flavor, and Mandy from Caster Quest. We talked about being women in the male-dominated world of podcasting, how to start your own podcast, and lessons we have learned since starting.
  • We believe the con should be any time other than June, because in Houston, it is hotter than the face of the sun. Thank everything for air conditioning!
  • We had a good time passing out our podcasting stickers and getting new people interested in the podcast. Then, we met these guys…

Predator vs Bitches Sailor Moon Gender Bend

  • That Predator guy’s mask clicked just like in the movie! It was really cool and a little terrifying! We also loved the gender-bending Sailor Moon! It was so much fun to see everyone dressed up and people were so nice and always willing to take a picture!
  • We attended Cult 45: The Movie Podcast’s live podcast show! We love these guys!! We are looking forward to doing some kind of cross-over show with them. They are our new best friends… and we LOVE Brandon’s wife Carla! Call us! 🙂
  • We also attended the Aliens Q&A, which was fantastic. We wish it would have been twice as long because with a large panel, you don’t get very far with the questions. Also, Bill Paxton totes made eye contact with Liz. She is sticking to that story.
  • We attended the Business of Podcasting panel with our own Producer Craig, along with a lot of other people who run awesome podcasts. Ming Chen was also on this panel and it was great getting to meet him.
  • Heather made it to the Boondock Saints Q&A, which was short one Norman Reedus. Sean Patrick Flannery was all sorts of hot and dirty. Good times.
  • Con Crud is a real thing. Many people feel bad now after being around so much.

Coming Up

We were thrilled to be a part of this show and are really looking forward to next year! Now, we will be returning to our regular format and will be covering our Book Club on World War Z (Max Brooks), a superhero movie catch up (Deadpool, Captain America: Civil War, and X-Men: Apocolypse), and we will also be having some brand new guests that we met at the con!

Episode 40 – Classic Movie Club Alien/Aliens

In this episode, Liz and Heather introduce their very first Classic Movie Club: Alien/Aliens in preparation for the upcoming 30th anniversary Aliens cast reunion at Comicpalooza 2016 June 17 – 19. Classic Movie Club Alien Aliens

We are combining both Alien and Aliens in this review. We are looking forward to other Classic Movie Clubs in the future.

Classic Movie Club Alien Aliens

Alien

Released in 1979. This movie was pretty tense, and we can see this at the time being scary as shit. There was so much tension and claustrophobia in this movie – It’s a capsule in space…nowhere to go. The feeling of being trapped is probably the deepest human fear. These movies force you to face the fear since there is no escape.

We watched the two movies back-to-back and it was very interesting to see the difference both the Director and script can make.

One of the main antagonists in Alien is the computer – Mother. Also, Ian Holm’s character turns out to be a robot, and they didn’t know he was a robot (and the robot goes nuts). The robot has a directive that the main goal is to get the alien – crew expendable. “Holy blinking lights!” – Heather. They had a pretty awesome light bulb budget. If you have photo epileptic seizures, you may want to skip this one.

The Alien – that shit escalated quickly! It went from Face Hugger to penis with teeth to massive monster in a matter of hours. It was also ONE monster, rather than a bunch. It almost makes it scarier, because you just don’t know where it is.

Self destruct sequence – This is the most complex self-destruction sequence we have ever seen. And then, there is no way to cancel it. They should change that. This has inspired some of the favorite things that pop up in other movies – like the self-destruct sequence in Spaceballs.

Cryo – Why does Ripley have to get in with only porn panties? Can you not go into deep sleep in a jumpsuit? Also, she is the only one to make it out of the first movie, which is tragic. At the end of the second movie, she will be the only one to get out. From an HR perspective, they are going to start thinking it’s her.

None of this would have happened if John Hurt could have kept his damn balance.

Classic Movie Club Alien Aliens

Aliens

Released 1986 – The premise here is that Ripley’s escape pod has been found 58 years after the fact. The cat is also still alive, so probably the oldest cat on record. Now, Ripley has been found by “the company” and has been asked to go back to this planet as a consultant under the agreement that they would NOT be trying to get any of the aliens off the planet, but to rescue the 70 families that were now living on the teraformed planet. The company has a giant military presence in order to make this happen.

James Cameron tends to use the same actors in all of his movies, so we recognize these people, but they don’t have enough personality to form a connection with. We were kind of rooting for the aliens over the humans, since the humans were just annoying stereotypes. We are talking to you, Bill Paxton. We LOVE you, but for all of the 1980s, you played nothing but whiny bitch characters.

We thought originally that Paul Reisser’s character was going to be the romantic interest, but fortunately that didn’t happen. More so, he turned out to be a rapist. Then, there is the character of Newt. We really like this, but it’s almost like they couldn’t get Ripley into action unless she had a child to mother, and then she would start lactating, and save the day. It felt manipulative. They also trained her on a 2-minute instruction on how to shoot a gun, but when Newt goes missing, she duct tapes two guns together and goes hunting. They could have made her a badass, but it just didn’t have enough build up.

We didn’t find either of the movies scary. Maybe if we watched it back in the day it would have been, but we now see things that are so much more graphic that this didn’t hold up in the scary-genre. Aliens was a decent action movie, but there were a lot of things that could have been different.

Classic Movie Club Alien Aliens

Come find us at Comicpalooza June 17 – 19! We will be at the Aliens panel for sure, and will also be participating in a Women in Podcasting panel on Friday, the 17th.

ComicCon Pre

Episode 39 – ComicCon Prep

In this episode, Liz and Heather talk about ComicCon Prep for the upcoming comic con season. This is also our first official episode to talk about our participation in the 2016 Comicpalooza Podcast Partnership Program! You can follow our information on Twitter and Instagram and stuff at #Comicpalooza #CPPodFam #CPHOU and #CPHTX.

ComicCom Prep

This will be Liz’s first convention, so Heather will school everyone on how to do the cons well. The one thing that separates this kind of con from the classic “flea market comic book show” that we may have seen on The Simpsons is really the celebrity guests, and most of them will interact with the con-goers, which is awesome.

So, here are some things you need to know to be prepared.

  • Download the convention app – Make sure you check the schedule often and keep up with the changes, in case there is a change in location/time.
  • Ways to see celebrities: Sign up to get an autograph (paid) or a picture (also paid), but also the celebrity Q & As (moderated panels).
  • Visit the Dealer Room often! They sell everything you can think of. Think about bringing a wheeled bag because shit gets heavy over time. Also make sure to visit Artist Alley. This is where we met Sarita Ackerman last year, who generously donated her amazing portrait of Wonder Woman that we raffled off last year.Sarita Ackerman - artist
  • Think about getting a hotel room if you live far enough away because you have a place to stash your stuff, but you also have somewhere to crash.
  • Buy your passes early! And if you think you only want to go to one or two days, think about buying the three-day pass because you really get the most bang for your buck.

What to expect:

  • There are going to be a LOT of people there. Be prepared to stand in lines. Lots of lines. And the Q&A lines start very early.
  • LOTS of walking. Wear comfortable shoes. Remember to wear your activity tracker! (Liz’s recommendation for those looking for an alternative to a fitbit – the Spire. It tracks your emotional health based on respiration, in case you have some anxiety or panic issues, it can help calm you down before it gets into a massive issue.
  • Be on the lookout for quiet rooms or areas where you may be able to sit and take a rest if you tend to get overwhelmed. Bring some earbuds to zone out.
  • There will be little kids there, so be sure to notice how adorable they are.

Dos and Don’t

  • DO: Comfortable shoes
  • DO: Bandaids (for blisters)
  • DO: Cross-shoulder/messenger bag to carry things around so that you have open hands.
  • DO: Check for off-site activities. There could be several activities that take place as a group after the main con concludes for the day.
  • DO: Go on Friday, even if its later. The lines for tickets will be shorter.
  • DO: Make friends! You will be sitting in line and chatting with people! Talk to the cosplayers and appreciate their costumes.
  • DO: Go early
  • DO: Get the multi-day pass, even if you only go two days (usually cheaper and it is a lot cheaper).
  • DO: Go to headliner Q&As early! They will fill up quickly.
  • DON’T: Make fun of other people. People have put a lot of time and money into this.
  • DON’t: get frustrated. It’s easy to get annoyed, but most of these people are volunteers and they are don’t the best they can.
  • DON’T be a dick.

You will have to pay for parking. The cons in Texas are all on the lightrail lines, so plan it out. If you go early, you can park in the Discovery Green underground parking, or if you are staying at the hotel, so you can park though there (again, paid).

We are looking so forward to getting out into the people and we will be passing out our Nerdy Bitches podcast stickers and perhaps some other giveaways…So be on the look out for both Liz and Heather! We will be Tweeting/Facebooking/Instagramming out way through.

Discovery Green across the street had a lunch place by the lake. On the East side of the convention center, the parking is cheaper over there. Lucky’s pub is close by and a good place to eat, along with several other eateries. But, the NERDOM place is Neil’s Bahr – The geekiest bar in town (no food), but lots of games, comics, and you will probably see all of the podcast folks hanging out there. Some of the celebs might also be there.. who knows?
