Not so great expectations

Episode 60: Not So Great Expectations

Happy New Year! 2016 was a total bitch, and not in a good way like we are. In this episode, we talk about the not so great expectations of being a girl, and also provide a memorial on the late Carrie Fisher.

Not so great expectations

In Memory of Carrie Fisher…

We recorded the actual episode before Christmas, so when we woke up to the news that Carrie Fisher, our beloved Princess Leia, had died a few days after a heart attack. It was really devastating. Liz wrote about it on her blog, so you can read that here, but this was our recognition of an amazing woman who was an actor, an advocate for the mentally ill, and a fantastic writer. The day after, her mother, Debbie Reynolds, also died. So much tragedy in such a short time. Prayers for Gary Fisher. You can’t explain death to a dog. Let the love of Carrie carry us forward into DOING something, rather than waiting for things to happen. Let’s make the world a better place.

Moving on…

Not So Great Expectations

Heather loves day-drinking, especially at a festival. And the drunk texts from her during these events are also amazingly weird. But we want to talk about what it’s like being a girl when you aren’t really a “girly girl” and aren’t meeting up to expectations – ours or the world’s. First of all, just because we don’t always want to be girly doesn’t mean we want to be dudes. Get over your “penis envy” comments just because we don’t feel like doing our hair or makeup every day.

Story about Speedos. Just… don’t. Also, New Year’s Resolutions… stop. Stop hating yourself when you don’t meet these flighty goals. Make real goals and work on them. We talk about some goals that we have made over the years to better ourselves that aren’t just short-term goals.

The expectations we put on ourselves are often harder than the ones society imposes. We always assumed that we would be more put-together as adult women. And we judged, growing up, the moms/women who weren’t. We imagined that at some age, we would wake up and get our shit together. Still waiting…

Listen in to the rest.

Note: This is the “comfy” bra Operaman brought Liz when we went out and forgot to put one on…

Episode 35 – Geek Crushes

In this episode, Liz and Heather have invited back our friends Jessica and Lanie to talk all about Geek Crushes!

Geek Crush

We get to marry our two favorite topics – geeks and boys! (Or girls… we don’t discriminate!). Heather’s childhood crush was Wil Wheaton, Liz’s was River Phoenix, and Lanie mentioned Leonord Nemoy, and Jessica loves Hugh Jackman. Operaman was helpful enough to help us come up with the world’s longest list of geeky crushes, both male and female. Crushes are not really sexualized, they are really just the people we want to moon over, have coffee with, and who makes us smile.

Some of these people we absolutely love more because of who they are and what they stand for, other than just what they look like.

*Side Note: We will be playing a game of Dungeons & Dragons with a bunch of newbie gals soon, so that would be awesome.

Catherine Tate and David Tennet are freaking awesome, so check this out.

Neil deGrasse Tyson – Liz totally has a geek crush on him, but Heather doesn’t get why.

We are realizing that as we get older, we are much more attracted to someone who is smart and interesting, rather than just the dude with the abs. This really crushes the stereotype that women really like the bad boy over the nice guy. Lanie has done some psychological research on this… the bad boys get the girls BECAUSE they are originally NICE, and then they flip their “douche switch” and the ladies keep chasing the dragon of the nice guy.

Joseph Gordon Levitt – cutest thing ever! We could totally stick him in our pockets and just snuggle him! He also has a really cool new project called HitRecord.org that you should completely check out. It is a community site for creative people to work together to create awesome new projects.

Make sure to listen to the whole episode to hear us drool over the whole list.

Episode 32 – Boozylicious Girl Talk

In this episode, Liz and Heather welcome back some other nerdy bitches for a boozylicious girl talk day! We have Cassie, Kitty, and Sophie in the studio with us to drink and talk what it is like to be a girl geek! This episode’s drinks are sort of Star Wars themed.

Boozylicious Girl Talk

Heather’s drink: Tatooine Sunset

  • V8 Splash
  • Cointreau
  • 2 maraschino cherries

Liz’s drink: Smuggler’s Delight

  • Dr Pepper
  • Bacardi Torched Cherry Rum

Cassie’s drink: The Dark Side

  • Orange juice or V8 Tropical
  • Vanilla vodka
  • Triple Sec
  • Black vodka

FYI – Don’t forget to turn the boot when guzzling beer a la Beerfest. Otherwise, you will get it in the face, like a bad porno.

Heather shares an article on ridiculous lies pop culture tells to women (from the Daily Dot):

  1. A makeover will change your life. We disagree, mostly. Or perhaps we agree? For that one day, until we have to recreate the look the next day. Go get a professional bra fitting. You won’t regret it once you actually wear a bra that fits.
  2. Sex is very good every time and all the time. Meh. That’s way overstating things. We don’t want to feel guilty if it isn’t great all the time.
  3. Even in a post-apocalyptic world, women’s hygiene is always on point. Yeah, right. Our hygiene isn’t on point in this PODCAST, let alone living in a tree.
  4. Money is not necessary to live a glamorous life. We don’t think you can necessarily have a social life on a minimum wage job. A glamorous life is also super subjective.
  5. A man is not interesting unless he is brooding, dark, and tortured. Way too much work to deal with a high maintenance whiny bitch like that.

A big thanks to Cassie, Kitty, and Sophie for being on the show again!

Episode 9 – Vag Power

Welcome to Vag Power, with the Nerdy Bitches! In this episode, Heather and Liz discuss how women are portrayed in movies, video games, and comics. girl-power-t-shirt-hr

Liz tells her story of her niece’s realization of how discount/overstock stores work. Nerdy bitch in the making? Absolutely!

Comment from Jessica, a loyal listener:

“Right now I’m playing Legion of Heroes on my android phone and am trying to figure out the practicality of a lot of the outfits. I play games sometimes and I have to wear a blanket OVER my official gaming bathrobe because my female characters look so fucking cold….”

“I know men are the main demographic for video games, and I know men like seeing scantily clad women. Got it, but how would men feel if they saw their character fighting trolls on a snowy mountain in a Speedo? Their testicles would shrink INTO their small intestines.”

Fair point, Jessica. We agree!! Check out this video that completely describes what you are talking about: Female Armor Sucks

Even your average three-year old understands that it isn’t fair that Wonder Woman doesn’t get armor, but Batman does (with nipples!)

Listen to how we feel about an all-female Avengers. Check out the Hawkeye Initiative to see how it would really look if male characters were drawn like female characters. (And we vote Death to Duckface!!)

The Bechdel Test – Does it have a good representation of women?

  • It has to have at least two named-female characters in it,
  • who talk to each other, and
  • about something besides a man.

What movies failed? Avengers, Spiderman, Batman (new or old), Superman

Let’s talk about the ways in which media has gotten women’s roles right:

  • Agents of Shield
  • Agent Carter
  • Big Bang Theory
  • Guardians of the Galaxy

What does the future hold? We’ve come a long way, but still have a ways to go. We have hope with Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel coming up in the next few years.

ANNOUNCEMENT: We are announcing our first official choice for the Nerdy Bitches Book Club: Princess Bride by William Goldman. We will be discussing this book in three weeks (Episode 12)! Go, read it. Then listen. It’s a book club, so there will absolutely be spoilers.

Random – Liz reveals her awesome Zombie Apocalypse Plan. Heather is just planning to burn her home down while still inside.

Bitch of the Week: Electronic addictions. Video games (Heather) and Internet (Liz).

Out of Context Quote of the Week:

“A story about a female superhero is just too far-fetched. Studios won’t make what they can’t sell. They’ll stick to machine gun raccoons and emotionally complex house plants. It’s just easier for people to relate.” –BigLuca
