I used to be a big into Monopoly. Owned a few novelty boards even.

If a game of Monopoly takes more than about 20-30 minutes, it’s because you are not actually playing by the rules as written in the game. And no one ever does. Too the point that most people don’t even actually know what the real rules are because they have never actually played the correctly.

Now I’m not actually trying to convince you that the game is good. I will say that it is not for everybody, and I don’t really understand why it is as “popular” as it seems to be.

The fact that there are so many house rules for the game says something about the issues that the game has as far being played by the general public at large. Basically, if you have to completely change the game in an attempt to make it fun for you, maybe that game is not for you.

And despite my early love for the game, there are very good reasons I don’t play it anymore and have gotten rid of all my novelty boards. There are better games to play.
