Episode 72 – Cards Against Humanity LIVE at Comicpalooza!

Welcome to our Cards Against Humanity LIVE at Comicpalooza episode!! We had our very own panel where we recorded with a live audience and played an awesome game and gave out maybe the best trophy in the history of the world! Take a listen to find out what happens when 15 people are given a set hand of 5 cards and have to battle it out, tournament-style to see who can win!

A special thank you to celebrity guest judge, Miss Jenny Kelley (ILoveFlavor on YouTube,owner/host of Hello Woodlands, and local cosplay guru!)!

Cards Against Humanity LIVE at Comicpalooza!

A massive shout-out to the people we actually knew in the room – Jon (Dogfin Radio), Brandon (Cult 45 Movie Podcast), Erica (Dogfin Radio, formerly of Serves You Right Podcast), Mandy (CasterQuest), Rob Zipp, Jessica (colleague to Operaman and all around friend/friend of the show/former guest), Randy, and so many others!

We are so thankful that we had a packed audience at the show and that everyone was completely awesome! Thank you to everyone who attended, participated, and didn’t freak out that a 9-year old was in the room with her headphones blaring (we aren’t monsters!!)

And another thank you to Jenny (as Emma Frost)

for being amazing with Liz’s niece, Madison, who was so excited to attend her first Comicpalooza! She had a ball and loved that everyone was so complimentary of her Harley Quinn outfit!

And the winner was…

Jon from Dogfin Radio! He managed to beat out the other 14 players with the best cards, with extra points awarded for voices!

Heather picked out the BEST trophy in the history of the world, so make sure you capture that caption…

Book Club: Felicia Day

Book Club: Felicia Day

In this book, Felicia talks about her weird (her words!) childhood, schooling, and talent and how they led her to become the awesome nerd we all know and love today. If she looks familiar, you have probably seen her in Supernatural, Eureka, Doctor Horrible’s Sing-a-long Blog, and ALL over the internet! She pretty much invented the web series with The Guild! This is definitely a must-read book for geek girls out there. She also talks about her own experience after gamer gate and how she came back from that stronger.

Just a note – This is actually our second recording, but we lost the first one, so just know, you missed the Oscar-worthy edition. But, this is finally our chance to get around to talking about Season 9 and how much we really enjoyed it… even Clara (who we typically hated)!!

We go through each of the two-fers in the season and then talk about the new writer and whomever the new Doctor might be. We loved that they brought back Missy for the first few episodes. She is a great villain and we love her.

Robots and cyborgs and droids oh my

Episode 67 – Robots and Cyborgs and Droids, Oh My!!

Robots and Cyborgs and Droids Oh My!! In this episode, Heather and Liz discuss their favorite near-human companions throughout sci-fi and fantasy! Join us as we hit our favorites throughout our favorite fandoms.

Robots and cyborgs and droids oh my

Robots and Cyborgs and Droids, Oh My!!

This may be our most mansplained episode ever, so we will see how that goes along. A robot is a machine that does the job of a human. An android is a robot is generally made to look like a human. Cyborgs have organic material mixed with mechanical stuff.

[We are not talking bout Roombas and robot maids and sex bots, though we do actually talk about a few of those things. Vacuums totally blow, by the way.]

We took a quiz to see which Star Wars droids we are. Liz got K-2SO and Heather got BB-8. We would like to see a buddy movie made with those two, so someone get on that! We go on a bit of a tangent regarding introverts vs. extroverts. Shout out to our new friends at Serves You Right podcast!

The Star Wars universe is chock full of droids, and these are mostly our favorites. C-3PO, R2-D2, BB-8, K-2SO.

We also went through literature, music, film, and TV.

Music:

  • Mr. Roboto by Styx

Literature:

  • Tik Tok from Return to Oz (1907)
  • Marvin the Paranoid Android (Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy)

Film:

  • Ash (Alien) / Bishop (Aliens)
  • Boobo – Clash of the Titans
  • T-800 from Terminator
  • Beta (Alex Rogan replacement) from The Last Starfighter

2016 Netflix Originals Part 2

2016 Netflix Originals Part 2

We have decided that there should be Netflix for pets. But, since there isn’t currently, we can only talk about the one for peoples. So, here is the rest of 2016.

  • Orange is the New Black – We don’t care for the main characters, but Red is awesome. Also an interesting look at the difference between private and public prison institutions. Just look what happened to Luke Cage!
  • Voltron: Legendary Defender – Absolutely excellent! Completely worth the watch, especially if you aren’t into other areas of anime. Season 2 will be out in January 2017.
  • BoJack Horsemen – BoJack has issues. The animal jokes throughout are funny.
  • Stranger Things – This show is crazy good. The 1980s nostalgia alone is worth the watch. Mystery/thriller/sci-fi that really represents the 80s. It’s dark and gritty. We talk about the differences between the disappearances of Will and Barb and the importance of an active imagination. We go in depth with the different characters and actors on this one.
  • Luke Cage – Damn. He is hot. Aside from the hotness, this show is really good. Definitely one to check out and binge. Long discussion here.
  • Black Mirror – Totally fucked up, so it may take some time to get into. Kind of like your Klout score becoming your net worth.
  • Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life – A 4 part 90-min series catching up on what happened since we last visited Stars Hollow.

Be sure to leave us a 5-star review on iTunes or wherever. Because we are awesome.

2016 Movie Review - Part 2

Episode 52 – 2016 Movie Review – Part 2

In this episode, Liz and Heather complete the 2016 Movie Review – Part 2. Listen is as we continue talking about the movies we have seen, those we haven’t, and the ones we are looking forward to between now and the end of the year.

2016 Movie Review - Part 2

2016 Movie Review – Part 2

Picking up where we left off in last week’s episode, we got halfway through May, so here we roll!

May

  • Angry Birds The Movie – We didn’t see, nor do we really care to see. We may come across it at some point, so time will tell.
  • Alice Through the Looking Glass – No interest for Heather. Liz saw the first one and enjoyed it more than she thought she would and will probably see this one in the future, but didn’t get around to it in the theaters. (In Liz’s story, it was Carol Channing, NOT Phyllis Diller. Sorry.)
  • X-Men: Apocolypse – We liked it and may need to watch it again to get more of the details. We love their version of Quicksilver better than the one from The Avengers. We also really like Wolverine, obviously.

June

  • Finding Dory – We haven’t seen it and heard it isn’t that great, but we will see.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 – Haven’t seen, not big fans of Michael Bay.
  • The Nice Guys – This one didn’t get its due, so go check it out. Very much in the vein of Lethal Weapon. So much fun – high praise from Heather!
  • Swiss Army Men – Harry Potter becomes a human swiss army knife. It looked really good and funny, so it is one to check out. We haven’t seen it yet, but we will track it down when it comes out.
  • The BFG – This was a childhood classic book, so we will probably come across this movie. It came out right around the time we were doing Comicpalooza, so it was a tough time.
  • Independence Day: Resurgance – We didn’t get to see this and we really wanted to, but it was super slammed in the reviews, so I guess we will come across it sooner or later.
  • Warcraft – We weren’t into the game, but the trailers look pretty epic, so maybe we will see it at some point. Video games don’t always translate well to movies, so we will see.

July

  • Secret Life of Pets – We were so interested in seeing this! The previews started coming out back in January and looked so good! Neither of us had the chance to see it, so we will see it at some point.
  • Ghostbusters – People crapped all over this movie, but it was awesome. It wasn’t the same as the original movie (which honestly wasn’t the best movie ever – it survives on nostalgia), and that was the best part. It didn’t throw the fact that they were all girls in your face. They just were. They were smart and awesome.
  • Star Trek Beyond – We both liked it better than the last one. It was a good movie and had some great comedic moments. They did a lovely nod to the death of Leonard Nemoy, which we really loved. The Bones/Spock/Kirk relationship in this movie was amazing and really nods back to the roles they had in the original series. Check out For The Love of Spock on iTunes – It’s a documentary by Adam Nemoy (Leonard Nemoy’s son) talking about the life and career of his dad. It was beautiful and completely worth watching. Plus, Beastie Boys Sabotage being played as “classical music” was pure awesome.
  • Bad Moms
  • Batman: The Killing Joke – Came out for one day only before the DVD release. We went to see this with several other area podcasters and that part was fun. The show is twelve shades of fucked up.

August

  • Suicide Squad
  • Pete’s Dragon
  • Kubo
  • Florence Foster Jenkins
  • Sausage Party

September

  • Sully
  • Bridget Jones’ Baby
  • The Magnificent Seven

Remaining Movies of 2016

October

  • Jack Reacher: Never Go Back
  • Keeping Up With The Joneses

November

  • Doctor Strange
  • Trolls
  • Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
  • Bad Santa 2
  • Gilmore Girls: Seasons (Netflix)

December

  • Office Christmas Party
  • Star Wars: Rogue One
  • Assassin’s Creed
  • Passengers

In our next episode, we finally get around to talking about our Book Club episode on Pride and Prejudice and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

2016 Movie Review - Part 1

Episode 51 – 2016 Movie Review Part 1

In this episode, Heather and Liz cover a 2016 Movie Review – Part 1 for our annual episode. Make sure to catch up next week with the second part of the episode. Last year, we did our first year-in-movies review, so we are excited to bring this back as an annual event.

2016 Movie Review Part 1

Movies – Part 1 (January through May)

Listen in as we talk month by month through the first half of the year covering the movies we did see versus the ones we wanted to see.

January

  • The Hateful Eight – Samuel L Jackson at his best. This technically came out in January, though it did have a release date in December.
  • The Witch – how did you like this, horror fans?

February

  • Pride and Prejudice and Zombies – We have a book club coming up on this book in the next few weeks, so we haven’t seen the movie yet. Stay tuned!
  • Zoolander 2
  • DEADPOOL!!! We both just LOVED this freaking movie. We didn’t know what to expect, but it blew all expectations out of the water. So funny and bloody at the same time. SUPER offensive, so stop taking your kids to see these thing! We are thinking of doing a movie commentary on this movie because there is so much to talk about. We apologize for not getting an episode out earlier, but this year has been crazy busy. Well done, MCU! Well done indeed.
  • Zootopia – This movie was really cute! Great messages and fun for both kids and adults.

March

  • 10 Cloverfield Lane – Didn’t see it, but Heather is looking forward to it.
  • Whiskey Tango Foxtrot – A maybe later movie
  • Divergent: Alligient – OMG This totally made us happy that it crapped out and went straight to distribution. We absolutely hated the third useless book of the series when we did our book club episode, so this just gave us a lot of joy. Of course, we still keep on ranting.
  • Batman vs. Superman – We are so tired of talking about this movie. The extended edition was definitely better than the theatrical release. It was really curious why they would cut out these SUPER IMPORTANT plot points in favor of the crap scenes they let in. Wonder Woman is still the best part of this movie. Stop fucking it up, DC.
  • My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 – We didn’t get a chance to see this, but really want to.

April

  • The Boss – We didn’t get around to seeing this. The trailer didn’t do as much for us as Spy or The Heat. We hope it is great, but we haven’t seen it. Probably Netflix later.
  • Hard Core Henry – We aren’t big on the shaky-cam first person stuff. It is nauseating.
  • The Huntsman: Winter’s War – Didn’t see, but are more interested in seeing it now that it doesn’t have Kristen Stewart.
  • The Jungle Book (live action)
  • Keanu

May (Part 1)

  • Captain America: Civil War – WOOOOOO!!! We both really loved this one! We really meant to do an entire movie review on this one, but didn’t get around to it with all of our Comicpalooza daze. Team Cap vs. Team Tony – we aren’t really buying the lineup here.

Catch us next week for the second half of our annual movie review!

DC TV

Episode 46 – DC TV

In this episode, Liz and Heather team up with our new friend Carla (http://www.carlasueinvites.com/) on to talk about D.C. TV! First, she brought us some Classy as Fuck note cards, so we were super excited about that!

DC TV

On to the show…

We wanted to talk about how great D.C. has been doing in the television realm – Way to go, CW! We will mainly discuss Arrow, The Flash, and Gotham, since they are available of Netflix and 2/3 of us don’t have cable. Heather will talk about Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow. Arrow is utterly awesome. We have seen up through Season 3 (thanks, Netflix). It is total binge watching fodder. You will have to stop and watch The Flash once he comes into play because there are a lot of crossover episodes between the two shows. We all have a love for John Barrowman, who has now been cast as Malcolm Merlin in all of the DC television shows.

We pop over to American Gods (the new series coming out) for a bit and drool over the guy playing Shadow. Yum. And Dane Cook will be playing, Robbie, the douchebag, which works perfectly. If you haven’t listened to our Book Club episode on American Gods, go do it! It’s a total freak show, much like the book.

We also take some time to drool over the hot guys in the DC movies and tv shows, because we can.

This past week, Liz and Heather met up with some other Houston-area podcasters to see Batman: The Killing Joke, which we really liked. They did add a big hunk of Batman/Barbara Gordon that wasn’t in the graphic novel that was kind of pathetic.

Make sure you follow us on Twitter (@nerdybitchespod), Instagram (@nerdybitches), Pinterest (@nerdybitches), and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/Nerdy-Bitches-Podcast-896606467044899/).

Next week, we will be having our first ever crossover episode with another podcast! We are teaming up with 1980s Movie Graveyard to do a movie commentary on 1985’s Commando! Make sure you check it out and give the graveyard guys a like!
