Episode 67 – Robots and Cyborgs and Droids, Oh My!!

Robots and Cyborgs and Droids Oh My!! In this episode, Heather and Liz discuss their favorite near-human companions throughout sci-fi and fantasy! Join us as we hit our favorites throughout our favorite fandoms.

Robots and cyborgs and droids oh my

Robots and Cyborgs and Droids, Oh My!!

This may be our most mansplained episode ever, so we will see how that goes along. A robot is a machine that does the job of a human. An android is a robot is generally made to look like a human. Cyborgs have organic material mixed with mechanical stuff.

[We are not talking bout Roombas and robot maids and sex bots, though we do actually talk about a few of those things. Vacuums totally blow, by the way.]

We took a quiz to see which Star Wars droids we are. Liz got K-2SO and Heather got BB-8. We would like to see a buddy movie made with those two, so someone get on that! We go on a bit of a tangent regarding introverts vs. extroverts. Shout out to our new friends at Serves You Right podcast!

The Star Wars universe is chock full of droids, and these are mostly our favorites. C-3PO, R2-D2, BB-8, K-2SO.

We also went through literature, music, film, and TV.

Music:

  • Mr. Roboto by Styx

Literature:

  • Tik Tok from Return to Oz (1907)
  • Marvin the Paranoid Android (Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy)

Film:

  • Ash (Alien) / Bishop (Aliens)
  • Boobo – Clash of the Titans
  • T-800 from Terminator
  • Beta (Alex Rogan replacement) from The Last Starfighter
  • Ralph and Max Flight of the Navigator
  • Johnny 5 – Short Circuit
  • Robocop
  • The Fixits – Batteries Not Included
  • Dot Matrix – Spaceballs
  • Fembots – Austin Powers

Time Travel

Episode 62 – Time Travel

In this episode, Heather and Liz talk time travel in entertainment (but not real science, so don’t tell us we don’t know science – because we already know that).

Time Travel

Time Travel

We are discussing time travel in TV and movies. Since we don’t have Dr. Neil Degrass Tyson on the show (but we would LOVE to), we won’t be talking the actual physics/science behind the potential for time travel, or even things like wormholes. We are sticking to what we can Google and what we can see in entertainment.

Time Travel Theories
  1. Fixed timeline – Single fixed history which is unchangeable. Whatever you go back and try to change will be what created it in the first place. Examples: 12 Monkeys and Donnie Darko.
  2. Dynamic timeline – Very small change in the past has a huge impact on the future (Butterfly effect or chaos theory). Example: Back to the Future. Paradox: Grandfather paradox – If you go back in time and kill your grandfather and thus you should never be born, but the fact that YOU went back in time means that you existed and the grandpa can’t be killed.
  3. Multi-verse – Every change you make creates a new timeline. Example: Doctor Who, The Flash
  4. Trapped in time – Time is paused and they will rejoin the timeline. Example: Jumanji, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me; Planet of the Apes (1968).

Bootstrap Paradox: occurs when an object or piece of information sent back in time becomes trapped within an infinite cause-effect loop in which the item no longer has a discernible point of origin, and is said to be “uncaused” or “self-created”.

Wormhole – Often used as a method for time travel

Time Travel – in TV

  • Doctor Who
  • Quantum Leap
  • Legends of Tomorrow
  • Agents of Shield (ish)
  • Continum

Time Travel – in Movies

  • Back to the Future
  • Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure
  • Groundhog Day*
  • Interstellar
  • Terminator
  • Time Bandits
  • Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
  • Butterfly Effect
  • Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
  • X-Men Days of Future Past
  • Flight of the Navigator
  • 13 Going on 30

Episode 24 – Peter Capaldi as The Doctor

On this episode, Heather and Liz talk about Peter Capaldi as The Doctor. This is the 12th doctor (or is he the 13th, with the edition of the War doctor), and our 4th doctor in the new series.

peter-capaldi_12th-doctor_doctor-who

We compare him to previous doctors, including Matt Smith, who is the Labrador of the Doctor Who series. We are also desperate to see River Song come back (and she will at Christmas!).

Capaldi’s Doctor is the grumpy doctor we had to kind of grow to love. He is so different from the previous doctors, so it took a little time for the fans (and Clara, as his companion) to warm up. He doesn’t ask for permission or approval from the humans – he just gets it done. He has a little glint in his eye that shows he cares, but he isn’t outwardly cuddly.

We also really love Capaldi as an actor. We have seen him in several other things, and he is fantastic. If you want to see him in something adorable, check him out in Paddington as the nosy neighbor.

*Random note – We will be creating a new geek cocktail – Sex on a TARDIS.

FYI – We are pretty much over Clara and are ready for her run to end. Her character has finally gotten a little better, but since she is leaving, we know something is going to happen. We are also still wondering what the hell happened to the kid that Danny Pink sent back from death. And how they ran across Danny’s descendant in the future. Did Clara get pregnant and we haven’t seen that? Was it that kid that she raised? We just don’t know. Is it lazy writing, or will we get the answer two doctors from now?

How do you feel about the switch from Matt Smith to Peter Capaldi? Matt Smith is like a cute baby animal, where as Capaldi is a grumpy cat barn owl.

We had zero bitches this week, so good happy week for the Bitches.

Episode 4 – The Doctor’s Companions

Spoilers… In episode 4, we talk about Doctor Who companions. companions

We focus on the reboot of Doctor Who, starting with the 9th Doctor, in 2005. Companions covered are:

  • Rose Tyler
  • Captain Jack Harkness
  • Mickey
  • Donna Noble
  • Sarah Jane Smith
  • Amy & Rory (“The Ponds”)
  • River Song/Melody Pond
  • Craig Owen (only in 2 episodes, but we love him!)
  • Clara Oswald (in all her iterations)

We discuss our favorites and least favorites companions throughout the series. We love River Song. She is the number one on both of our lists. We also love Captain Jack! The Ponds also made it to our favorites list. Donna Noble makes the list in our favorite for all of her snark, wit, and personality.

Donna wins our vote for the saddest ending for any companion.

Our Most Hated Least Favorites – Mickey (the Tin Dog!), Martha Jones (UGH!), Clara (Booooring!), and early Rose Tyler (we liked her better going forward).

We also talk a bit about the show’s writers, including a slight debate regarding Russell T. Davies vs. Steven Moffett. Who writes the cheesier episodes? Who writes the best day-to-day shows versus big plot twists?

What is the point of the companion for the Doctor? Why does he need them and what do they bring to the table for a Time Lord?

Episode 2 – Hobbits-es

HOBBITS!! Or Hobbitses, if you prefer the Smeagol/Gollum pronunciation. Either way, we love them!

The Hobbit

Bag End – Hobbiton – The Shire – Middle-earth

This week, we cover all things Middle-earth, Hobbit-ish, and Peter Jackson (as related to these films (LOTR, and The Hobbit). The basic truth is that we LOVE them. Whether you read the books or only saw the movies, you have to love these stories. If not, get the hell off our podcast! Just kidding… sort of…

We discuss the transition from book to movies – should they have been translated into three movies? Did they destroy the plot line? Did they overstep their bounds by showing so much of the White Council?

We also talk about the technical aspects of high frame rate (48 fps) photography and 3D and our opinions on whether those are worth the high ticket prices. And motion capture – Andy Serkis and Benedict Cumberbatch are both completely amazing in their motion capture roles of Gollum and Smaug, respectively.

And… SPIDERS! What the hell is up with all of the spiders in movies? We blame Tolkein for spiders popping up in various movies and shows like Harry Potter and Doctor Who. And that giant puppy-sized spider in our real world??  Just – No.

And we discuss the characters and actors portraying them, inclusive of random characters that were never in the book.

Bitch of the WeekEbola. Scare tactics and fear-mongering in the media after the recent scare in the U.S.– This is clearly medical science’s Super Bowl, much like the weatherman’s hurricane here on the Gulf Coast.

Random Internet Comments taken out of contextfrom DaddyScratches, “The time to buy a used, almost free Bobcat is when you see one. That’s what my old Grandpappy used to say.”  Sound advice, DaddyScratches. Machinery or wildcat? You decide.

Episode 1 – Introduction to the Nerdy Bitches Podcast

Nerdy Bitches Podcast

Nerdy Bitches Logo Created by Heather

Welcome to the Nerdy Bitches podcast!

In this introduction episode, Liz and Heather discuss all manner of nerdy topics, including Star Wars, Doctor Who, Harry Potter, and more! Liz is the owner and blogger at Self Saving Princess, and Heather, in her words, is just your average Nerdy Bitch. The bitches recall their indoctrinations into nerd culture, and discuss some of their favorite things.

When searching for female-hosted nerdy podcasts, we found the genre was a “sausage fest”, and any podcasts run by chicks were either solely dedicated to one nerd topic, or were the kinds of female-related issues you don’t really want to listen to–A podcast with wings!

We are also taking back the word “Bitch,” so deal with it. We discuss what that means in regards to women who are willing to speak their minds versus terms given to their male counterparts.

This episode introduces the kinds of topics we enjoy, our weekly Bitch of the Week, random internet comments taken out of context, and each bitch’s recommendations.

Our first Bitch of the Week – Fucking Hipsters! (Adjective, not verb – we never condone sleeping with hipsters!) Stupid nerd-posers who wear their geeky glasses (with or without lenses) and beanie hats, and ruin Geekdom for the rest of us.
