It’s time for the 2017 Movie Review Part 2!! In this episode, Liz and Heather talk about the movies they have seen in the first two weeks of July, along with predictions on the movies slated to be released through the end of the year. The second half is going to be EPIC!!
2017 Movie Review Part 2
Since we ran long in Part 1 last week, we didn’t get to finish the movies that had come out as of the date of recording. So, we begin with July and roll on through December. You will have to check back in with us later in the year to see how our predictions held up!
We are especially looking forward to November and December, as there will be some awesome films released, including Thor: Ragnarok, Justice League, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Jumanji, and Pitch Perfect 3! Fingers crossed that all of these live up to their respective hypes!
You can also check out our Nerdy Bitches Podcast store!! Be sure to set your content filters to “OFF” to be able to see the really awesome stuff!

In this episode, Liz and Heather team up again with Houston comedienne Liz Padjen to talk about upcoming movies! Listen as Heather and (other) Liz talk about their connection to serial killer Ted Bundy, along with all of the movies coming out soon that we are excited to see (or perhaps not). Hold onto your butts.
Heather has collected some plot summaries for movies coming up for the end of 2016/beginning 2017 for us to discuss. Movies include: Pete’s Dragon (including a tangent on wooden roller coasters that kill); Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them; Bad Santa 2 (including a rant on Angelina Jolie); Rogue One (and sticking things into droids – plans, Obi-Wan sperm, etc. Also, Tattooine is clearly Dune); LEGO Batman (and if you don’t like the Golden Girls, go fuck yourself); Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (Chris Pratt is still sex on a stick); Doctor Strange; and Justice League (Don’t fuck it up again, Zac Snyder).
We also randomly talk about House of Pies/Guys, dogs driving with birds and a man with no shirt, 90 minute Easter eggs, Golden Girls Legos, Thank You for Being a Thug, please correct my quiz score, etc. Also, check out the crazy cat’s lady’s dating video (posted below) and an addition rant about cat assholes. Random rants again with Clark Gregg and Jennifer Grey, fuck you Zac Snyder, blah blah blah. Hashtag Dick Smacker.
Check out Liz’s Thank You for Being a Thug video here:
For fans of the Book Club, our next episode will cover both Pride and Prejudice AND Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. We will compare/contrast the two books and why we probably didn’t bother to read the original in high school.
Recommendations: LumberJanes; and Princeless; and Rock and Roll Bingo at House of Blues.
In this episode, Liz and Heather talk about ComicCon Prep for the upcoming comic con season. This is also our first official episode to talk about our participation in the 2016 Comicpalooza Podcast Partnership Program! You can follow our information on Twitter and Instagram and stuff at #Comicpalooza #CPPodFam #CPHOU and #CPHTX.
This will be Liz’s first convention, so Heather will school everyone on how to do the cons well. The one thing that separates this kind of con from the classic “flea market comic book show” that we may have seen on The Simpsons is really the celebrity guests, and most of them will interact with the con-goers, which is awesome.
So, here are some things you need to know to be prepared.
Download the convention app – Make sure you check the schedule often and keep up with the changes, in case there is a change in location/time.
Ways to see celebrities: Sign up to get an autograph (paid) or a picture (also paid), but also the celebrity Q & As (moderated panels).
Visit the Dealer Room often! They sell everything you can think of. Think about bringing a wheeled bag because shit gets heavy over time. Also make sure to visit Artist Alley. This is where we met Sarita Ackerman last year, who generously donated her amazing portrait of Wonder Woman that we raffled off last year.
Think about getting a hotel room if you live far enough away because you have a place to stash your stuff, but you also have somewhere to crash.
Buy your passes early! And if you think you only want to go to one or two days, think about buying the three-day pass because you really get the most bang for your buck.
What to expect:
There are going to be a LOT of people there. Be prepared to stand in lines. Lots of lines. And the Q&A lines start very early.
LOTS of walking. Wear comfortable shoes. Remember to wear your activity tracker! (Liz’s recommendation for those looking for an alternative to a fitbit – the Spire. It tracks your emotional health based on respiration, in case you have some anxiety or panic issues, it can help calm you down before it gets into a massive issue.
Be on the lookout for quiet rooms or areas where you may be able to sit and take a rest if you tend to get overwhelmed. Bring some earbuds to zone out.
There will be little kids there, so be sure to notice how adorable they are.
Dos and Don’t
DO: Comfortable shoes
DO: Bandaids (for blisters)
DO: Cross-shoulder/messenger bag to carry things around so that you have open hands.
DO: Check for off-site activities. There could be several activities that take place as a group after the main con concludes for the day.
DO: Go on Friday, even if its later. The lines for tickets will be shorter.
DO: Make friends! You will be sitting in line and chatting with people! Talk to the cosplayers and appreciate their costumes.
DO: Go early
DO: Get the multi-day pass, even if you only go two days (usually cheaper and it is a lot cheaper).
DO: Go to headliner Q&As early! They will fill up quickly.
DON’T: Make fun of other people. People have put a lot of time and money into this.
DON’t: get frustrated. It’s easy to get annoyed, but most of these people are volunteers and they are don’t the best they can.
DON’T be a dick.
You will have to pay for parking. The cons in Texas are all on the lightrail lines, so plan it out. If you go early, you can park in the Discovery Green underground parking, or if you are staying at the hotel, so you can park though there (again, paid).
We are looking so forward to getting out into the people and we will be passing out our Nerdy Bitches podcast stickers and perhaps some other giveaways…So be on the look out for both Liz and Heather! We will be Tweeting/Facebooking/Instagramming out way through.
Discovery Green across the street had a lunch place by the lake. On the East side of the convention center, the parking is cheaper over there. Lucky’s pub is close by and a good place to eat, along with several other eateries. But, the NERDOM place is Neil’s Bahr – The geekiest bar in town (no food), but lots of games, comics, and you will probably see all of the podcast folks hanging out there. Some of the celebs might also be there.. who knows?
Welcome to Vag Power, with the Nerdy Bitches! In this episode, Heather and Liz discuss how women are portrayed in movies, video games, and comics.
Liz tells her story of her niece’s realization of how discount/overstock stores work. Nerdy bitch in the making? Absolutely!
Comment from Jessica, a loyal listener:
“Right now I’m playing Legion of Heroes on my android phone and am trying to figure out the practicality of a lot of the outfits. I play games sometimes and I have to wear a blanket OVER my official gaming bathrobe because my female characters look so fucking cold….”
“I know men are the main demographic for video games, and I know men like seeing scantily clad women. Got it, but how would men feel if they saw their character fighting trolls on a snowy mountain in a Speedo? Their testicles would shrink INTO their small intestines.”
Fair point, Jessica. We agree!! Check out this video that completely describes what you are talking about: Female Armor Sucks
Even your average three-year old understands that it isn’t fair that Wonder Woman doesn’t get armor, but Batman does (with nipples!)
Listen to how we feel about an all-female Avengers. Check out the Hawkeye Initiative to see how it would really look if male characters were drawn like female characters. (And we vote Death to Duckface!!)
The Bechdel Test – Does it have a good representation of women?
It has to have at least two named-female characters in it,
who talk to each other, and
about something besides a man.
What movies failed? Avengers, Spiderman, Batman (new or old), Superman
Let’s talk about the ways in which media has gotten women’s roles right:
Agents of Shield
Big Bang Theory
Guardians of the Galaxy
What does the future hold? We’ve come a long way, but still have a ways to go. We have hope with Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel coming up in the next few years.
ANNOUNCEMENT: We are announcing our first official choice for the Nerdy Bitches Book Club: Princess Bride by William Goldman. We will be discussing this book in three weeks (Episode 12)! Go, read it. Then listen. It’s a book club, so there will absolutely be spoilers.
Random – Liz reveals her awesome Zombie Apocalypse Plan. Heather is just planning to burn her home down while still inside.
Bitch of the Week: Electronic addictions. Video games (Heather) and Internet (Liz).
Out of Context Quote of the Week:
“A story about a female superhero is just too far-fetched. Studios won’t make what they can’t sell. They’ll stick to machine gun raccoons and emotionally complex house plants. It’s just easier for people to relate.” –BigLuca
Heather: The Hawkeye Initative (thehawkeyeinitiative.com)
Liz: The Ghost and the Darkness (movie) – on Netflix
Marvel is Ah-may-zing! This episode, we talk all things Marvel and the past, present, and future of the Marvel cinematic universe.
The phases of the Marvel universe include:
Phase 1: Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk (Edward Norton), Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America (swoon!), and The Avengers.
Phase 2: Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D (TV), Agent Carter (TV), Guardians of the Galaxy (HOLY CRAP!!), Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Ant-Man.
Phase 3: Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War – Part I, Captain Marvel, Inhumans, and Avengers: Infinity War – Part II.
We talk about each of the movies in turn that are already out, and the ones upcoming. We spend a lot of time talking Guardians of the Galaxy because it’s freaking awesome.
Well now I’m standing. Happy? We’re all standing now. Bunch of jackasses, standing in a circle. – Rocket
Bitch of the Week – Women’s geeky t-shirt sizes. Why the hell are they so small? Men don’t have this problem when attempting to buy clothing!
Feed the Troll – “If we didn’t have Democrats, we wouldn’t need police.” … Really.
from Heather – John Carter (movie) – with a disclaimer: If you loved the original story/book, don’t watch the movie.
