Episode 62 – Time Travel

In this episode, Heather and Liz talk time travel in entertainment (but not real science, so don’t tell us we don’t know science – because we already know that).

Time Travel

Time Travel

We are discussing time travel in TV and movies. Since we don’t have Dr. Neil Degrass Tyson on the show (but we would LOVE to), we won’t be talking the actual physics/science behind the potential for time travel, or even things like wormholes. We are sticking to what we can Google and what we can see in entertainment.

Time Travel Theories
  1. Fixed timeline – Single fixed history which is unchangeable. Whatever you go back and try to change will be what created it in the first place. Examples: 12 Monkeys and Donnie Darko.
  2. Dynamic timeline – Very small change in the past has a huge impact on the future (Butterfly effect or chaos theory). Example: Back to the Future. Paradox: Grandfather paradox – If you go back in time and kill your grandfather and thus you should never be born, but the fact that YOU went back in time means that you existed and the grandpa can’t be killed.
  3. Multi-verse – Every change you make creates a new timeline. Example: Doctor Who, The Flash
  4. Trapped in time – Time is paused and they will rejoin the timeline. Example: Jumanji, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me; Planet of the Apes (1968).

Bootstrap Paradox: occurs when an object or piece of information sent back in time becomes trapped within an infinite cause-effect loop in which the item no longer has a discernible point of origin, and is said to be “uncaused” or “self-created”.

Wormhole – Often used as a method for time travel

2016 Movie Review - Part 2

Episode 52 – 2016 Movie Review – Part 2

In this episode, Liz and Heather complete the 2016 Movie Review – Part 2. Listen is as we continue talking about the movies we have seen, those we haven’t, and the ones we are looking forward to between now and the end of the year.

2016 Movie Review - Part 2

2016 Movie Review – Part 2

Picking up where we left off in last week’s episode, we got halfway through May, so here we roll!

May

  • Angry Birds The Movie – We didn’t see, nor do we really care to see. We may come across it at some point, so time will tell.
  • Alice Through the Looking Glass – No interest for Heather. Liz saw the first one and enjoyed it more than she thought she would and will probably see this one in the future, but didn’t get around to it in the theaters. (In Liz’s story, it was Carol Channing, NOT Phyllis Diller. Sorry.)
  • X-Men: Apocolypse – We liked it and may need to watch it again to get more of the details. We love their version of Quicksilver better than the one from The Avengers. We also really like Wolverine, obviously.

June

  • Finding Dory – We haven’t seen it and heard it isn’t that great, but we will see.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 – Haven’t seen, not big fans of Michael Bay.
  • The Nice Guys – This one didn’t get its due, so go check it out. Very much in the vein of Lethal Weapon. So much fun – high praise from Heather!
  • Swiss Army Men – Harry Potter becomes a human swiss army knife. It looked really good and funny, so it is one to check out. We haven’t seen it yet, but we will track it down when it comes out.
  • The BFG – This was a childhood classic book, so we will probably come across this movie. It came out right around the time we were doing Comicpalooza, so it was a tough time.
  • Independence Day: Resurgance – We didn’t get to see this and we really wanted to, but it was super slammed in the reviews, so I guess we will come across it sooner or later.
  • Warcraft – We weren’t into the game, but the trailers look pretty epic, so maybe we will see it at some point. Video games don’t always translate well to movies, so we will see.

July

  • Secret Life of Pets – We were so interested in seeing this! The previews started coming out back in January and looked so good! Neither of us had the chance to see it, so we will see it at some point.
  • Ghostbusters – People crapped all over this movie, but it was awesome. It wasn’t the same as the original movie (which honestly wasn’t the best movie ever – it survives on nostalgia), and that was the best part. It didn’t throw the fact that they were all girls in your face. They just were. They were smart and awesome.
  • Star Trek Beyond – We both liked it better than the last one. It was a good movie and had some great comedic moments. They did a lovely nod to the death of Leonard Nemoy, which we really loved. The Bones/Spock/Kirk relationship in this movie was amazing and really nods back to the roles they had in the original series. Check out For The Love of Spock on iTunes – It’s a documentary by Adam Nemoy (Leonard Nemoy’s son) talking about the life and career of his dad. It was beautiful and completely worth watching. Plus, Beastie Boys Sabotage being played as “classical music” was pure awesome.
  • Bad Moms
  • Batman: The Killing Joke – Came out for one day only before the DVD release. We went to see this with several other area podcasters and that part was fun. The show is twelve shades of fucked up.

August

  • Suicide Squad
  • Pete’s Dragon
  • Kubo
  • Florence Foster Jenkins
  • Sausage Party

September

  • Sully
  • Bridget Jones’ Baby
  • The Magnificent Seven

Remaining Movies of 2016

October

  • Jack Reacher: Never Go Back
  • Keeping Up With The Joneses

November

  • Doctor Strange
  • Trolls
  • Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
  • Bad Santa 2
  • Gilmore Girls: Seasons (Netflix)

December

  • Office Christmas Party
  • Star Wars: Rogue One
  • Assassin’s Creed
  • Passengers

In our next episode, we finally get around to talking about our Book Club episode on Pride and Prejudice and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

Episode 45 – Upcoming Movies

In this episode, Liz and Heather team up again with Houston comedienne Liz Padjen to talk about upcoming movies! Listen as Heather and (other) Liz talk about their connection to serial killer Ted Bundy, along with all of the movies coming out soon that we are excited to see (or perhaps not). Hold onto your butts.

Movie Sneak Peek Episode

Movies

Heather has collected some plot summaries for movies coming up for the end of 2016/beginning 2017 for us to discuss. Movies include: Pete’s Dragon (including a tangent on wooden roller coasters that kill); Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them; Bad Santa 2 (including a rant on Angelina Jolie); Rogue One (and sticking things into droids – plans, Obi-Wan sperm, etc. Also, Tattooine is clearly Dune); LEGO Batman (and if you don’t like the Golden Girls, go fuck yourself); Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (Chris Pratt is still sex on a stick); Doctor Strange; and Justice League (Don’t fuck it up again, Zac Snyder).

We also randomly talk about House of Pies/Guys, dogs driving with birds and a man with no shirt, 90 minute Easter eggs, Golden Girls Legos, Thank You for Being a Thug, please correct my quiz score, etc. Also, check out the crazy cat’s lady’s dating video (posted below) and an addition rant about cat assholes. Random rants again with Clark Gregg and Jennifer Grey, fuck you Zac Snyder, blah blah blah. Hashtag Dick Smacker.

Check out Liz’s Thank You for Being a Thug video here:

For fans of the Book Club, our next episode will cover both Pride and Prejudice AND Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. We will compare/contrast the two books and why we probably didn’t bother to read the original in high school.

Recommendations: LumberJanes; and Princeless; and Rock and Roll Bingo at House of Blues.

ComicCon Pre

Episode 39 – ComicCon Prep

In this episode, Liz and Heather talk about ComicCon Prep for the upcoming comic con season. This is also our first official episode to talk about our participation in the 2016 Comicpalooza Podcast Partnership Program! You can follow our information on Twitter and Instagram and stuff at #Comicpalooza #CPPodFam #CPHOU and #CPHTX.

ComicCom Prep

This will be Liz’s first convention, so Heather will school everyone on how to do the cons well. The one thing that separates this kind of con from the classic “flea market comic book show” that we may have seen on The Simpsons is really the celebrity guests, and most of them will interact with the con-goers, which is awesome.

So, here are some things you need to know to be prepared.

  • Download the convention app – Make sure you check the schedule often and keep up with the changes, in case there is a change in location/time.
  • Ways to see celebrities: Sign up to get an autograph (paid) or a picture (also paid), but also the celebrity Q & As (moderated panels).
  • Visit the Dealer Room often! They sell everything you can think of. Think about bringing a wheeled bag because shit gets heavy over time. Also make sure to visit Artist Alley. This is where we met Sarita Ackerman last year, who generously donated her amazing portrait of Wonder Woman that we raffled off last year.Sarita Ackerman - artist
  • Think about getting a hotel room if you live far enough away because you have a place to stash your stuff, but you also have somewhere to crash.
  • Buy your passes early! And if you think you only want to go to one or two days, think about buying the three-day pass because you really get the most bang for your buck.

What to expect:

  • There are going to be a LOT of people there. Be prepared to stand in lines. Lots of lines. And the Q&A lines start very early.
  • LOTS of walking. Wear comfortable shoes. Remember to wear your activity tracker! (Liz’s recommendation for those looking for an alternative to a fitbit – the Spire. It tracks your emotional health based on respiration, in case you have some anxiety or panic issues, it can help calm you down before it gets into a massive issue.
  • Be on the lookout for quiet rooms or areas where you may be able to sit and take a rest if you tend to get overwhelmed. Bring some earbuds to zone out.
  • There will be little kids there, so be sure to notice how adorable they are.

Dos and Don’t

  • DO: Comfortable shoes
  • DO: Bandaids (for blisters)
  • DO: Cross-shoulder/messenger bag to carry things around so that you have open hands.
  • DO: Check for off-site activities. There could be several activities that take place as a group after the main con concludes for the day.
  • DO: Go on Friday, even if its later. The lines for tickets will be shorter.
  • DO: Make friends! You will be sitting in line and chatting with people! Talk to the cosplayers and appreciate their costumes.
  • DO: Go early
  • DO: Get the multi-day pass, even if you only go two days (usually cheaper and it is a lot cheaper).
  • DO: Go to headliner Q&As early! They will fill up quickly.
  • DON’T: Make fun of other people. People have put a lot of time and money into this.
  • DON’t: get frustrated. It’s easy to get annoyed, but most of these people are volunteers and they are don’t the best they can.
  • DON’T be a dick.

You will have to pay for parking. The cons in Texas are all on the lightrail lines, so plan it out. If you go early, you can park in the Discovery Green underground parking, or if you are staying at the hotel, so you can park though there (again, paid).

We are looking so forward to getting out into the people and we will be passing out our Nerdy Bitches podcast stickers and perhaps some other giveaways…So be on the look out for both Liz and Heather! We will be Tweeting/Facebooking/Instagramming out way through.

Discovery Green across the street had a lunch place by the lake. On the East side of the convention center, the parking is cheaper over there. Lucky’s pub is close by and a good place to eat, along with several other eateries. But, the NERDOM place is Neil’s Bahr – The geekiest bar in town (no food), but lots of games, comics, and you will probably see all of the podcast folks hanging out there. Some of the celebs might also be there.. who knows?

Episode 17 – Harry Potter After Dark

In this episode, Liz and Heather discuss their favorite bits of information about the Harry Potter world after-the-fact (Potter After Dark).

hogwarts-after-dark

On the tail of Heather attending Houston’s Comicpalooza, we discuss all of our favorite things we have learned about the Harry Potter universe after the series ended. A lot of this came from the Jason Isaacs’ (Lucius Malfoy) panel at the convention.

ANNOUNCEMENT:  We have a giveaway! At Comicpalooza, met an awesome artist who gave us a Wonder Woman print ($60 retail value) to give away on our podcast!! Sweet!!!

Sarita

In order to qualify to be in the drawing for this print, we will announce the keyword sometime throughout this podcast – you need to tweet us, Facebook, Instagram, or e-mail us the keyword. You have until July 31, 2015 to enter! You need to make sure it is addressed to us, and you can post the keyword. On August 1st, we will randomly draw the winner and will contact you if you win! Jason Isaacs as Lucius Malfoy Harry Potter

Jason Isaacs as Lucius Malfoy Harry Potter

Topic 1 – Jason Isaacs’ appearance at Houston’s Comicpalooza 2015 and how he impacted the outcome of the Lucius Malfoy character. The video is on YouTube, so make sure to check that out.

Topic 2 – Harry Potter facts we learned after the series/movies ended

    • Dumbledore is gay. – We never thought anything about this.
    • Rowling is the first person to become a billionaire by writing books.

  • Fred & George Weasley were born on April Fool’s Day.
  • Draco Malfoy attended Fred’s funeral. He stood in the far back, careful not to be seen. He’d never let on that he secretly thought the twins were quite funny, and he was truly sorry he’d been part of the reason Fred died. He felt that way about all who died, but he would have never attended the funeral. Draco would never tell anyone he was there, and George would never tell anyone he saw Draco cry, apologizing to the headstone.
  • Vladimir Putin was pissed about the portrayal of Dobbie because he felt it was based on him.
  • Dumbledore & Harry saw the same thing when they looked into the Mirror of Erised – Themselves reunited with their families.
  • Voldemort was incapable of loving someone because he was conceived under the effect of a love potion.
  • A Patronus often mutates to take the image of the love of one’s life because they so often become the happy thought that generates a Patronus. This is why Snape’s Patronus was Lily’s doe.
  • Severus Snape is the only Deatheater who can produce a Patronus.
  • Harry, Ron, and Herminoe were all put on Chocolate Frog cards. Both Ron and Albus Dumbledore consider this their greatest achievements

Topic 4 – Horcrux in Harry vs. the Dursleys (from the article) – Is this why they were so cruel? Horcruxes make people that much worse, even if they are already terrible people. We don’t know if this is intentional by Rowling, but it makes sense to us and becomes Head Canon.

Topic 3 – From the article “37 things the Harry Potter movies need to answer (to the books)”, here are a few that we agree definitely needed to be mentioned in the movies.

  • Aunt Petunia’s howler from Dumbledore and why they were unable to just kick Harry out when they clearly hated him. They don’t explain to the audience why Petunia was so jealous and hateful.
  • The Elder wand – in the book, he uses the wand to mend his own wand and then places it back with Dumbledore. In the movie, without fixing his own wand – he breaks it in half and chucks it over the side of the bridge.
  • Where the heck did the Weasley twins get the money to open a shop when their family is really poor? They got it from Harry.
  • Dumbledore’s backstory. Seriously? “This was his sister” is about all that comes out of it, when it was truly complex.
  • The Marauders were never explained – Who were they and how were they connected to Harry? And what did Harry do with the map after Hogwarts?
  • All memories connected with horcruxes are removed, so how can people really understand what they are?
  • Weasley house fire. That never happened. How could they afford to rebuild?

Episode 11 – Harry Potter

This week, the Nerdy Bitches talk all things Harry Potter. We are supermassive fans of the series, both books and movies. Why were they on the banned list at one point?

harry-potter-books

Liz is currently reading the books to and watching the movies with her 7-year-old niece.

Themes

  • Friendship – They aren’t completely torn apart by petty shit. They always come back together and have each others backs. Each character has his or her strengths and weaknesses, and they play off of those well. Harry probably wouldn’t have made it very far without Ron and Hermoinie. Additional friendships come in to play as the series – Luna, Hagrid, Neville, Ginny, etc.
  • Good vs. Evil – This is a very strong theme throughout the whole series. But even within the good and bad, there are factions of good and evil within. Example – The Malfoys. They are terrible people, but mostly because they don’t even have any motivation to do anything but follow what is easy. As we go through the series, we can see that Draco starts changing and isn’t ready to just go in full force.
  • Girls Kick Ass – The main character is Harry, but where would he be without Hermoinie? Hell, he can’t even fix his own glasses without her!
  • Some struggles are worthwhile – You have to go through the bad to get to the good. This series teaches youngsters that they CAN make a difference and stand up for what is right (just because it is right).

Are we the only ones who think that Hogwarts is the most dangerous school on the planet?? Why do people keep sending their children there? For example, why in the world would the Tri-Wizard Tournament even be a thing? Like is it ok to let 14-17 year olds play in some tournament that could kill them?

hogwarts

Where do magical children go to school before age 11? Do they go to Muggle school? Are they home schooled? What gives? What happens to the Squibs? Do you have to go to Muggle school? Are you just out? We need to know these things, J.K.

Favorite Characters

  • Heather’s: Snape! – It didn’t happen immediately, but he’s all Alan Rickman, so how could you not like that? He’s just awesome and hates stuff. The ultimate red herring in the series. We never saw that coming, even when they were showing us his good side all along.
  • Liz’s: So many. All of the characters are so well developed. But top 4 – Hermoinie, Luna, Hagrid, and Neville. They come out of the woodworks to help out and save the day. We love how Luna was always true to who she was – weird and all.

Least Favorite Characters

  • Delores Umbridge – gag!! Pure evil. All she cared about was power. She never cared who she hurt to get there.
  • The Durselys. Just mean people for no real reason. Jealous and hateful to Harry, almost to the end. Uncle Vernon has zero redeeming qualities. We do love that Dudley and Harry get to be friends at the end.

The Dumbledore Twist – What the hell? Everything along the way tells us that Dumbledore is the benevolent figure – until the end, when we find out that he has really been keeping Harry safe until it is the right time for him to die. Backstory on Dumbledore – also power hungry in his younger days, but when bad shit happens, his life changed.

You think you know people, but you don’t always.

And then there’s Hagrid. We LOVE Hagrid. He is the one person from the very beginning to always put himself out there for Harry. He really was a father-figure to Harry. He is sorely overlooked in this capacity. He is consistently good.

Dwayne-Rock-Johnson-Vin-Diesel-Fast-FiveBitch of the Week: Movie theater close-sitters: Hello, I got to the movie on-fucking-time, so no, I am not moving so you can sit together 2/3rds of the way back. Sit up front like the rest of the late assholes. If the theater’s not full, you get to sit on the very edge or the front four rows. If you wanted a good seat, you should have got here on time. Once the lights go down… game over. I’m in my spot – I don’t need to make more of an effort for your late ass.

Out of Context Comment of the Week:

Unless they say Hogwarts on the ass a’la juicy couture, these are a rip off… And even if they do, I dont want the word “warts” that close to my genitals. – JM

Episode 5 – Books to Movies

Books to Movies

Books to Movies

In Episode 5, the Bitches talk Books to Movies! We discuss our favorite book-to-movie conversions, and in some cases, movie-to-book!

Our biggest pet peeve is when our favorite book is destroyed when converted to the movie. We talk about some of our favorite books that went on to be fantastic movies:

  • Harry Potter (series)
  • Hunger Games (series)
  • Jurassic Park (just the first one)

…and some that were not as successful (Twilight, Beautiful Creatures, Lost World, etc.).  We even talk about a movie that launched a huge series of books – I’m talking to you, Star Wars!!

Here’s how adaptation works – almost everything in the movie is in the book in some form. But it’s as though the deck has been completely reshuffled and some of the cards have been assigned different values; some of the fours have been made into jacks, and some of the jacks have been made into twos. – Walter Kirn

Whether you love the book or love the movie (or both!!), don’t be a hater on what others enjoy. Can’t we nerds all just get along?? There are enough bullies in this world without turning on each other!

Have you ever noticed that a banned book is even MORE interesting than before it was banned?

Grab a bowl of popcorn and listen to us banter about our favorite books and the movies that we either loved or hated.

Bitch of the Week – People who don’t read at all, or who bully/shame people who do. What gives? Read a freaking book and stop bashing others for what they like to read!!

You can’t miss next episode!! It’s finally time for STAR WARS vs. STAR TREK… ooooh!

Episode 2 – Hobbits-es

HOBBITS!! Or Hobbitses, if you prefer the Smeagol/Gollum pronunciation. Either way, we love them!

The Hobbit

Bag End – Hobbiton – The Shire – Middle-earth

This week, we cover all things Middle-earth, Hobbit-ish, and Peter Jackson (as related to these films (LOTR, and The Hobbit). The basic truth is that we LOVE them. Whether you read the books or only saw the movies, you have to love these stories. If not, get the hell off our podcast! Just kidding… sort of…

We discuss the transition from book to movies – should they have been translated into three movies? Did they destroy the plot line? Did they overstep their bounds by showing so much of the White Council?

We also talk about the technical aspects of high frame rate (48 fps) photography and 3D and our opinions on whether those are worth the high ticket prices. And motion capture – Andy Serkis and Benedict Cumberbatch are both completely amazing in their motion capture roles of Gollum and Smaug, respectively.

And… SPIDERS! What the hell is up with all of the spiders in movies? We blame Tolkein for spiders popping up in various movies and shows like Harry Potter and Doctor Who. And that giant puppy-sized spider in our real world??  Just – No.

And we discuss the characters and actors portraying them, inclusive of random characters that were never in the book.

Bitch of the WeekEbola. Scare tactics and fear-mongering in the media after the recent scare in the U.S.– This is clearly medical science’s Super Bowl, much like the weatherman’s hurricane here on the Gulf Coast.

Random Internet Comments taken out of contextfrom DaddyScratches, “The time to buy a used, almost free Bobcat is when you see one. That’s what my old Grandpappy used to say.”  Sound advice, DaddyScratches. Machinery or wildcat? You decide.

Episode 1 – Introduction to the Nerdy Bitches Podcast

Nerdy Bitches Podcast

Nerdy Bitches Logo Created by Heather

Welcome to the Nerdy Bitches podcast!

In this introduction episode, Liz and Heather discuss all manner of nerdy topics, including Star Wars, Doctor Who, Harry Potter, and more! Liz is the owner and blogger at Self Saving Princess, and Heather, in her words, is just your average Nerdy Bitch. The bitches recall their indoctrinations into nerd culture, and discuss some of their favorite things.

When searching for female-hosted nerdy podcasts, we found the genre was a “sausage fest”, and any podcasts run by chicks were either solely dedicated to one nerd topic, or were the kinds of female-related issues you don’t really want to listen to–A podcast with wings!

We are also taking back the word “Bitch,” so deal with it. We discuss what that means in regards to women who are willing to speak their minds versus terms given to their male counterparts.

This episode introduces the kinds of topics we enjoy, our weekly Bitch of the Week, random internet comments taken out of context, and each bitch’s recommendations.

Our first Bitch of the Week – Fucking Hipsters! (Adjective, not verb – we never condone sleeping with hipsters!) Stupid nerd-posers who wear their geeky glasses (with or without lenses) and beanie hats, and ruin Geekdom for the rest of us.
