2017 Movie Review Part 2

Since we ran long in Part 1 last week, we didn’t get to finish the movies that had come out as of the date of recording. So, we begin with July and roll on through December. You will have to check back in with us later in the year to see how our predictions held up!

We are especially looking forward to November and December, as there will be some awesome films released, including Thor: Ragnarok, Justice League, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Jumanji, and Pitch Perfect 3! Fingers crossed that all of these live up to their respective hypes!

Episode 77 – BOOK CLUB: Storm Front

In this Book Club episode, Liz and Heather examine Storm Front by Jim Butcher. This is the first in the Dresden Files series. Both of us had received multiple recommendations to read this series over the years, so it was time we dug in!

Storm Front

Storm Front (Dresden Files #1)

Harry Dresden is the best at what he does. Well, technically, he’s the only at what he does. So when the Chicago P.D. has a case that transcends mortal creativity or capability, they come to him for answers. For the “everyday” world is actually full of strange and magical things — and most of them don’t play well with humans. That’s where Harry comes in. Takes a wizard to catch a — well, whatever.

There’s just one problem. Business, to put it mildly, stinks. So when the police bring him in to consult on a grisly double murder committed with black magic, Harry’s seeing dollar signs. But where there’s black magic, there’s a black mage behind it. And now that mage knows Harry’s name. And that’s when things start to get… interesting.

Magic. It can get a guy killed.

[Synopsis from jimbutcher.com]

We talk through this Professional Wizard turns murder suspect mystery. All opinions are our own and may vary wildly from that of each other or people who recommended to us to read this series.

Geek Hobbies

Episode 76 – Geek Hobbies

In this episode, Liz and Heather talk all about geek hobbies! We also talk about the latest announcement from the world of Doctor Who! The 13th Doctor is going to be a woman!! It’s about time!

Geek Hobbies

Geek Hobbies

We talk about the latest announcements from Doctor Who and Disney’s D23! The 13th Doctor, starting with the 2017 Christmas episode will be played by Jodie Whitaker (Broadchurch) and will be the first woman to play the iconic role. Heather takes on the online trolls who are outraged by this turn of events…of a fictional time-traveling alien.

D23 recently showed some behind-the-scenes footage of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which is opening in December 2017. They also released some amazing posters of the film’s main cast of characters that are absolutely breathtaking. You can watch the clip here:

We also get into the Best Geek and Nerd Hobbies list, as according to a list on ranker.com.We compare this list with our own geeky/nerdy interests, along with some rather interesting past times that made their list.

Wonder Women

Episode 75 – Wonder Women

In this episode, Liz and Heather, along with guest Kim Gordon, talk all about Wonder Women – not just the movie, but also the world of women directors and what we hope for the future! We give a few shout-outs right up front to the people who interacted with our Facebook page on the Name This Movie (with the wrong name) post.

Wonder Women

Wonder Women

We aren’t talking about the movie itself, but more about female directors, what this movie means for the industry going forward, and how the movie compared to the two DC movies that were released in 2016.

Costume-wise, we really liked what they did with Wonder Woman in that her armor is fairly realistic and could actually be fought in. She has flat shoes, leather shin guards that go over the knees and are bendable, etc. Her midriff isn’t hanging out, and it isn’t basically satin lingerie like Linda Carter’s Wonder Woman. The attention to detail was spot on! She wasn’t over-sexualized, and that is refreshing.

Rotten Tomatoes ratings on the recent D.C. Movies

  • Batman V. Superman: 27% (critics)
  • Suicide Squad: 25% (critics)
  • Wonder Woman: 92% (critics) [BOOM]

BTW – Dick Smackers is like the worst lip gloss flavor ever.

Female Directors

One of the biggest problems is that when we sit down and try to think of female directors, we could each come up with maybe four, and several of those we can’t even think of their names, we just know the movie. This is a serious problem, especially when one of the biggest female director in the industry can’t be mentioned without saying “ex-wife of James Cameron.” And if a female had two shit movies in a row, you would NEVER hear from them again. Unlike Zac Snyder and is shitstorm of crap movies getting one of the biggest franchises out there.

Video Games

We invited gamer and friend Kim Gordon (the other one) on this week’s episode to talk all about games, past and present. Kim is also heavily involved with Comicpalooza and married to one of the hosts of the Metal Geeks Podcast. We spend time talking about how we got into games and dispel the myth that video games are just for guys. Check out this video from Adam Ruins Everything:

We talk about some of the different game consoles, PC gaming, and Facebook/phone games. Bro-games/multi-player online games versus couch co-op or single player campaigns

Super Mario Bros, Street Fighter, Call of Duty, Lego everything (especially Jurassic World and Star Wars: The Force Awakens)!, Halo, Castle Wolfenstein, Doom, Oregon Trail, Mass Effect, Shadows of Mordor, Bejeweled, Just Dance, Rock Band

For more info, there are a couple of great documentaries currently on Netflix.

  • Atari: Game Over
  • Video Games: The Movie
  • Indie Game: The Movie
  • Man vs. Snake

Starting gamers recommendation: It really depends on age, skill level, interests, etc. There really is no stock answer.

Dungeons and Dragons for Beginners

Episode 73 – Dungeons and Dragons for Beginners

In this episode, Liz and Heather sit down with friends to talk about Dungeons and Dragons for beginners! We have with us Jessica (previously on our Cosplay and Geek Crush episodes) and Mandy from the podcast CasterQuest! This roundtable discussion consists of all newbies to the game of D&D and a little bit of information about the game’s history, myths and stereotypes, and pre-game talk for our new 5th edition campaign.

Dungeons and Dragons for Beginners

Dungeons and Dragons for Beginners

This episode is really our pre-game discussion before we mount our first campaign. Liz has played a handful of times, Heather hasn’t ever played, Jessica and Mandy have at least looked at a game before. We talk about why (or why not) someone would want to be the DM versus a player. We also talk about some of the things that may have kept us from playing this game before now.

We are playing the D&D 5th Edition Starter Set. This is a pre-generated game that includes the story, the character sheets, and even dice, where anyone can pick it up and learn to play. Operaman is serving as our DM for our game and Producer Craig is playing with us as well. We may be recording the game-play episodes as we go, but we will see how things progress. We will at the very least have a follow up episode after we complete the starter set game.

Liz explains the history of D&D that she got off this video here…

and a brief bit of info about how to play 5th edition with this video here…

The second video series is pretty awesome and breaks things down so they are much easier to understand than trying to read or explain how to play the game.

Also, to hear about stereotypes of D&D, check out this video…

So stay tuned for our upcoming D&D game episodes because they are sure to be incredibly entertaining!

And another thank you to Jenny (as Emma Frost)

for being amazing with Liz’s niece, Madison, who was so excited to attend her first Comicpalooza! She had a ball and loved that everyone was so complimentary of her Harley Quinn outfit!

And the winner was…

Jon from Dogfin Radio! He managed to beat out the other 14 players with the best cards, with extra points awarded for voices!

In this book, Felicia talks about her weird (her words!) childhood, schooling, and talent and how they led her to become the awesome nerd we all know and love today. If she looks familiar, you have probably seen her in Supernatural, Eureka, Doctor Horrible’s Sing-a-long Blog, and ALL over the internet! She pretty much invented the web series with The Guild! This is definitely a must-read book for geek girls out there. She also talks about her own experience after gamer gate and how she came back from that stronger.
