Wonder Women

Episode 75 – Wonder Women

In this episode, Liz and Heather, along with guest Kim Gordon, talk all about Wonder Women – not just the movie, but also the world of women directors and what we hope for the future! We give a few shout-outs right up front to the people who interacted with our Facebook page on the Name This Movie (with the wrong name) post.

Wonder Women

Wonder Women

We aren’t talking about the movie itself, but more about female directors, what this movie means for the industry going forward, and how the movie compared to the two DC movies that were released in 2016.

Costume-wise, we really liked what they did with Wonder Woman in that her armor is fairly realistic and could actually be fought in. She has flat shoes, leather shin guards that go over the knees and are bendable, etc. Her midriff isn’t hanging out, and it isn’t basically satin lingerie like Linda Carter’s Wonder Woman. The attention to detail was spot on! She wasn’t over-sexualized, and that is refreshing.

Rotten Tomatoes ratings on the recent D.C. Movies

  • Batman V. Superman: 27% (critics)
  • Suicide Squad: 25% (critics)
  • Wonder Woman: 92% (critics) [BOOM]

BTW – Dick Smackers is like the worst lip gloss flavor ever.

Female Directors

One of the biggest problems is that when we sit down and try to think of female directors, we could each come up with maybe four, and several of those we can’t even think of their names, we just know the movie. This is a serious problem, especially when one of the biggest female director in the industry can’t be mentioned without saying “ex-wife of James Cameron.” And if a female had two shit movies in a row, you would NEVER hear from them again. Unlike Zac Snyder and is shitstorm of crap movies getting one of the biggest franchises out there.

Here is the clip that Liz was talking about from Patton Oswalt’s Talking for Clapping standup

Dungeons and Dragons for Beginners

Episode 73 – Dungeons and Dragons for Beginners

In this episode, Liz and Heather sit down with friends to talk about Dungeons and Dragons for beginners! We have with us Jessica (previously on our Cosplay and Geek Crush episodes) and Mandy from the podcast CasterQuest! This roundtable discussion consists of all newbies to the game of D&D and a little bit of information about the game’s history, myths and stereotypes, and pre-game talk for our new 5th edition campaign.

Dungeons and Dragons for Beginners

Dungeons and Dragons for Beginners

This episode is really our pre-game discussion before we mount our first campaign. Liz has played a handful of times, Heather hasn’t ever played, Jessica and Mandy have at least looked at a game before. We talk about why (or why not) someone would want to be the DM versus a player. We also talk about some of the things that may have kept us from playing this game before now.

We are playing the D&D 5th Edition Starter Set. This is a pre-generated game that includes the story, the character sheets, and even dice, where anyone can pick it up and learn to play. Operaman is serving as our DM for our game and Producer Craig is playing with us as well. We may be recording the game-play episodes as we go, but we will see how things progress. We will at the very least have a follow up episode after we complete the starter set game.

Liz explains the history of D&D that she got off this video here…

and a brief bit of info about how to play 5th edition with this video here…

The second video series is pretty awesome and breaks things down so they are much easier to understand than trying to read or explain how to play the game.

Also, to hear about stereotypes of D&D, check out this video…

So stay tuned for our upcoming D&D game episodes because they are sure to be incredibly entertaining!

Go check out our friend Mandy at soundcloud.com/casterquest or wherever you get your podcasts!

Take a listen to find out what happens when 15 people are given a set hand of 5 cards and have to battle it out, tournament-style to see who can win!

A special thank you to celebrity guest judge, Miss Jenny Kelley (ILoveFlavor on YouTube,owner/host of Hello Woodlands, and local cosplay guru!)!

In this episode, Liz and Heather sit down for Book Club: Felicia Day (You’re Never Weird on the Internet, Almost). We are super excited since this author, actress, and all around nerdy phenomenon will be attending Comicpalooza here in Houston May 12-14 at the George R. Brown Convention Center!

Book Club: Felicia Day

Book Club: Felicia Day

In this book, Felicia talks about her weird (her words!) childhood, schooling, and talent and how they led her to become the awesome nerd we all know and love today. If she looks familiar, you have probably seen her in Supernatural, Eureka, Doctor Horrible’s Sing-a-long Blog, and ALL over the internet! She pretty much invented the web series with The Guild! This is definitely a must-read book for geek girls out there. She also talks about her own experience after gamer gate and how she came back from that stronger.

Independence Day

We spend a good amount of time discussing this movie – all of our favorite parts, lines, and gaping plot holes. But we really do love it! The show is nearly as long as the movie!

Episode 63 – Beating Winter Blues

In this episode, Liz and Heather discuss beating winter blues, especially in Houston where it isn’t generally cold much in the winter time.

Beating Winter Blues

Beating Winter Blues

Even though we don’t really get snowed in or have super cold days here, we can still get the winter blues. Especially on overcast, cold, and clammy (humid) days. Also, the time change in the winter really messes with your head and biorhythms. It makes you feel tired and grumpy. It does lead to a lot of binge watching and binge eating.

How to Beat the Blahs

  • Embrace it, if you can – Pretend you are choosing to spend the cold day in bed so that you can really enjoy the day.
  • Keep Warm – There are certain things that we want to do in winter, like hot chocolate, soups and stews, giant blankets. You may have to flip on the AC for this activity if you live in Houston.
  • Find the light – Get outside and find the sun, wherever it may be. Watch out for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which comes from a lack of Vitamin D. This can boost your mood and help you keep a little more active.
  • Pokemon Go will overheat your phone and keep your hands warm.
  • Eating healthy – When most of us binge watch and binge eat, you aren’t doing it with healthy foods. Try to get the foods in season and go to town.
  • Lighting (in doors) – Open the blinds and let in some light.
  • Make some kind of plans – You have the chance to catch up on things you have been meaning to do. Forget your resolutions and goals and make a PLAN and work the plan. Try not to isolate yourself. Go out and see people when you can.
  • Know your limitations – Don’t over-commit when you know it won’t be good for you. Do what you can do, plan for the things that take more time than you have. Get a day planner and keep track of what you need to do and make adjustments as you see things crowding up.
  • Find a hobby – Figure out what you like to do and make some time to do it. Puzzles, coloring, etc.
  • One Day at a Time – Just get through the day. Live in the moment. Life is much more manageable if you stay present. Mindfulness.
  • Talk it Through – Lean on your support system. Talk to someone who will listen and not judge or try to solve your problems. Make these relationships a two-way street. Don’t just dump all of your crap on someone and never allow them to do the same. If you can’t find a person to trust – get a journal. NEVER go back and read those journals.

WTF?

What the hell is dabbing?

Who gave you the right to change The Running Man [dance]??

DC TV

Episode 46 – DC TV

In this episode, Liz and Heather team up with our new friend Carla (http://www.carlasueinvites.com/) on to talk about D.C. TV! First, she brought us some Classy as Fuck note cards, so we were super excited about that!

DC TV

On to the show…

We wanted to talk about how great D.C. has been doing in the television realm – Way to go, CW! We will mainly discuss Arrow, The Flash, and Gotham, since they are available of Netflix and 2/3 of us don’t have cable. Heather will talk about Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow. Arrow is utterly awesome. We have seen up through Season 3 (thanks, Netflix). It is total binge watching fodder. You will have to stop and watch The Flash once he comes into play because there are a lot of crossover episodes between the two shows. We all have a love for John Barrowman, who has now been cast as Malcolm Merlin in all of the DC television shows.

We pop over to American Gods (the new series coming out) for a bit and drool over the guy playing Shadow. Yum. And Dane Cook will be playing, Robbie, the douchebag, which works perfectly. If you haven’t listened to our Book Club episode on American Gods, go do it! It’s a total freak show, much like the book.

We also take some time to drool over the hot guys in the DC movies and tv shows, because we can.

This past week, Liz and Heather met up with some other Houston-area podcasters to see Batman: The Killing Joke, which we really liked. They did add a big hunk of Batman/Barbara Gordon that wasn’t in the graphic novel that was kind of pathetic.

Make sure you follow us on Twitter (@nerdybitchespod), Instagram (@nerdybitches), Pinterest (@nerdybitches), and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/Nerdy-Bitches-Podcast-896606467044899/).

Next week, we will be having our first ever crossover episode with another podcast! We are teaming up with 1980s Movie Graveyard to do a movie commentary on 1985’s Commando! Make sure you check it out and give the graveyard guys a like!

Episode 44 – Liz Padjen

In this episode, Heather and Liz welcome Houston comedienne Liz Padjen to the studio for the first time. Heather met (other) Liz at Comicpalooza a few weeks ago. We talk all about being a comic, a geek, and a female in a male-dominated world of comedy (especially in Houston). Her new tagline: She’s classy as fuck!

Liz Padjen

(Other) Liz tells us all about her sketch comedy group (This Time On) on public access and can also be found on YouTube, and you should totally watch her Golden Girls tribute, Thank You For Being a Thug. Nerdy Bitch Liz is a HUGE Golden Girls fan, so this is perfection!

Seriously. This entire episode is us laughing…a lot.

We talk all about horseback riding, broken grandma’s, being from Utah (and not), finding your face on a stranger’s wall, podcasts and porn stars, penises, glove fetishes, strip clubs, oh my!

This may be the funniest show we have ever recorded. We now want to go to a strip club with other Liz’s sister. New trend: reading Yelp reviews for strip clubs.

You can find Liz on her Facebook page. Definitely go check out her act and her YouTube channel.
