Episode 103 – Mainstreaming Nerd Culture Across Generations

In this episode, Liz and Heather discuss mainstreaming nerd culture across generations. Has nerdom become more acceptable in mainstream society? Are nerds the new hipsters or exclusive club? Will Liz and Heather ever choose to clean their respective homes if they can get away with it? Tune in to this week’s episode to find out!

Mainstreaming Nerd Culture Across Generations

Heather has returned from her adventures with several comic cons in California and has much to say about them, compared to our experiences with Comicpalooza. Both are looking forward to the upcoming Fandemic Tour in Houston, so hopefully Liz will be able to attend and report.

Liz and Heather debate whether or not NERD has actually gone mainstream, or if it is specific to certain fandoms/genres. They also discuss how this has changed over the generations and some of the potential jumping off points.

We also talk quite a lot about cleaning (or not), and other off-the-rails topics, as usual.

Black Panther

Episode 99 – Black Panther

In this episode, Liz and Heather took a break from Comicpalooza to sit down with blogger and lifestyle guru, Shasie (Shasie’s World) to talk ALL about Black Panther! We will be focusing on the character of Black Panther, not just the stand-alone movie, so we will be discussing Captain America Civil War, Black Panther, and Avengers: Infinity War with SPOILERS all over the place. Also, please excuse the audio. When recording quickly on-the-go, we had a few slip-ups!

Black Panther

Black Panther

Again, SPOILERS! We sat down with Shasie at Comicpalooza to talk all about the character, Black Panther, and will crossover into the different movies he has been in. We jump right on in and talk about all of the crazy things that happen in all of the movies and what is going to happen during the next group of movies that we know are coming.

We love Black Panther. Period. When he pops up in Civil War in the chase of Winter Soldier, we were surprised and excited. We talk about villians, and how well Marvel is doing at bringing in villians who you can somewhat relate to and can feel (especially Killmonger).

We do jump around to talk about some of the rest of the MCU and had a great time.

Episode 91 – The Disney Empire

In this episode, Liz and Heather discuss the Disney empire and their plan for world domination. Or at least box office domination. Settle in for some Red Vines and Reeses Penis!

The Disney Empire

The Disney Empire

Time to bow to our new overlords! We discuss the recent announcement that Disney has acquired part of 20th Century Fox and the franchises it will now own and their implications for the movie industry. We also talk about what this takeover will mean for the future of Netflix, Hulu, and Disney’s proposed streaming service. Is this a good thing? Are we excited? What are the short- and long-term ramifications of this in light of the previous purchases of Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm?

FYI – This episode goes off the rails a bit in the middle.

Doctor Who Season 9

Just a note – This is actually our second recording, but we lost the first one, so just know, you missed the Oscar-worthy edition. But, this is finally our chance to get around to talking about Season 9 and how much we really enjoyed it… even Clara (who we typically hated)!!

We go through each of the two-fers in the season and then talk about the new writer and whomever the new Doctor might be. We loved that they brought back Missy for the first few episodes. She is a great villain and we love her.

Upcoming Book Club…

You’re Never Weird on the Internet (Almost) by Felicia Day!

Felicia will be at Comicpalooza this year, so we have our fingers crossed that we will get to meet her and maybe even get her on the podcast! So, get to reading! And feel free to tweet her and let her know to look for us!

2016 Netflix Originals Part 2

Episode 58 – 2016 Netflix Originals Part 2

In this episode, Liz and Heather cover 2016 Netflix Originals Part 2. One note – be sure to get your tickets for the Marvelous Nerd Year’s Eve (use craigprice as a coupon code for $50 off a 4-day pass) with Stan Lee in Dallas December 29 – January 1. Our own Producer Craig will be moderating panels and a lot of cool people will be there. Check it out at www.marvelousnye.com.

2016 Netflix Originals Part 2

2016 Netflix Originals Part 2

We have decided that there should be Netflix for pets. But, since there isn’t currently, we can only talk about the one for peoples. So, here is the rest of 2016.

  • Orange is the New Black – We don’t care for the main characters, but Red is awesome. Also an interesting look at the difference between private and public prison institutions. Just look what happened to Luke Cage!
  • Voltron: Legendary Defender – Absolutely excellent! Completely worth the watch, especially if you aren’t into other areas of anime. Season 2 will be out in January 2017.
  • BoJack Horsemen – BoJack has issues. The animal jokes throughout are funny.
  • Stranger Things – This show is crazy good. The 1980s nostalgia alone is worth the watch. Mystery/thriller/sci-fi that really represents the 80s. It’s dark and gritty. We talk about the differences between the disappearances of Will and Barb and the importance of an active imagination. We go in depth with the different characters and actors on this one.
  • Luke Cage – Damn. He is hot. Aside from the hotness, this show is really good. Definitely one to check out and binge. Long discussion here.
  • Black Mirror – Totally fucked up, so it may take some time to get into. Kind of like your Klout score becoming your net worth.
  • Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life – A 4 part 90-min series catching up on what happened since we last visited Stars Hollow.

Be sure to leave us a 5-star review on iTunes or wherever. Because we are awesome.

Episode 57 – 2016 Netflix Originals Part 1

In this episode, Liz and Heather discuss all of the 2016 Netflix Originals Part 1 that we have seen or heard good things about. Sit back and enjoy the first part, as we blab way too much for a single episode.

2016 Netflix Originals Part 1

We are also drinking on this episode – Fireball whiskey + Cream soda = Delicious! Plus a random discussion about coffee.

2016 Netflix Originals Part 1

  • Fuller House – Definitely worth the watch if you were a fan of the original series back in the 90s or in the last two decades as it has run in syndication.
  • Daredevil (Season 2) – Marvel has done an awesome job on these Netflix episodes because they can do so much in this format that can’t be done on network TV.
  • PeeWee’s Big Holiday – Same personality as back in the day, so check it out. Totally makes you forget about him jerking off in a movie theater.
  • Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Season 2) – So freaking funny. Enough said.
  • Patton Oswalt’s Talking for Clapping (stand-up comedy special) – So unbelievably funny. He is delightful. Also recommended: Lady Dynamite. Also, check out the College Humor series of BadMan (a take on Batman) – Patton Oswalt plays the Penguin and it’s awesome.
  • House of Cards – Creepy and awesome.
  • Grace and Frankie – Meh. This one had high hopes, but hasn’t really thrilled me yet.

2016 Movie Review - Part 2

Episode 52 – 2016 Movie Review – Part 2

In this episode, Liz and Heather complete the 2016 Movie Review – Part 2. Listen is as we continue talking about the movies we have seen, those we haven’t, and the ones we are looking forward to between now and the end of the year.

2016 Movie Review - Part 2

2016 Movie Review – Part 2

Picking up where we left off in last week’s episode, we got halfway through May, so here we roll!

May

  • Angry Birds The Movie – We didn’t see, nor do we really care to see. We may come across it at some point, so time will tell.
  • Alice Through the Looking Glass – No interest for Heather. Liz saw the first one and enjoyed it more than she thought she would and will probably see this one in the future, but didn’t get around to it in the theaters. (In Liz’s story, it was Carol Channing, NOT Phyllis Diller. Sorry.)
  • X-Men: Apocolypse – We liked it and may need to watch it again to get more of the details. We love their version of Quicksilver better than the one from The Avengers. We also really like Wolverine, obviously.

June

  • Finding Dory – We haven’t seen it and heard it isn’t that great, but we will see.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 – Haven’t seen, not big fans of Michael Bay.
  • The Nice Guys – This one didn’t get its due, so go check it out. Very much in the vein of Lethal Weapon. So much fun – high praise from Heather!
  • Swiss Army Men – Harry Potter becomes a human swiss army knife. It looked really good and funny, so it is one to check out. We haven’t seen it yet, but we will track it down when it comes out.
  • The BFG – This was a childhood classic book, so we will probably come across this movie. It came out right around the time we were doing Comicpalooza, so it was a tough time.
  • Independence Day: Resurgance – We didn’t get to see this and we really wanted to, but it was super slammed in the reviews, so I guess we will come across it sooner or later.
  • Warcraft – We weren’t into the game, but the trailers look pretty epic, so maybe we will see it at some point. Video games don’t always translate well to movies, so we will see.

July

  • Secret Life of Pets – We were so interested in seeing this! The previews started coming out back in January and looked so good! Neither of us had the chance to see it, so we will see it at some point.
  • Ghostbusters – People crapped all over this movie, but it was awesome. It wasn’t the same as the original movie (which honestly wasn’t the best movie ever – it survives on nostalgia), and that was the best part. It didn’t throw the fact that they were all girls in your face. They just were. They were smart and awesome.
  • Star Trek Beyond – We both liked it better than the last one. It was a good movie and had some great comedic moments. They did a lovely nod to the death of Leonard Nemoy, which we really loved. The Bones/Spock/Kirk relationship in this movie was amazing and really nods back to the roles they had in the original series. Check out For The Love of Spock on iTunes – It’s a documentary by Adam Nemoy (Leonard Nemoy’s son) talking about the life and career of his dad. It was beautiful and completely worth watching. Plus, Beastie Boys Sabotage being played as “classical music” was pure awesome.
  • Bad Moms
  • Batman: The Killing Joke – Came out for one day only before the DVD release. We went to see this with several other area podcasters and that part was fun. The show is twelve shades of fucked up.

August

  • Suicide Squad
  • Pete’s Dragon
  • Kubo
  • Florence Foster Jenkins
  • Sausage Party

September

  • Sully
  • Bridget Jones’ Baby
  • The Magnificent Seven

Remaining Movies of 2016

October

  • Jack Reacher: Never Go Back
  • Keeping Up With The Joneses

November

  • Doctor Strange
  • Trolls
  • Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
  • Bad Santa 2
  • Gilmore Girls: Seasons (Netflix)

December

  • Office Christmas Party
  • Star Wars: Rogue One
  • Assassin’s Creed
