Wonder Women

Episode 75 – Wonder Women

In this episode, Liz and Heather, along with guest Kim Gordon, talk all about Wonder Women – not just the movie, but also the world of women directors and what we hope for the future! We give a few shout-outs right up front to the people who interacted with our Facebook page on the Name This Movie (with the wrong name) post.

Wonder Women

Wonder Women

We aren’t talking about the movie itself, but more about female directors, what this movie means for the industry going forward, and how the movie compared to the two DC movies that were released in 2016.

Costume-wise, we really liked what they did with Wonder Woman in that her armor is fairly realistic and could actually be fought in. She has flat shoes, leather shin guards that go over the knees and are bendable, etc. Her midriff isn’t hanging out, and it isn’t basically satin lingerie like Linda Carter’s Wonder Woman. The attention to detail was spot on! She wasn’t over-sexualized, and that is refreshing.

Rotten Tomatoes ratings on the recent D.C. Movies

  • Batman V. Superman: 27% (critics)
  • Suicide Squad: 25% (critics)
  • Wonder Woman: 92% (critics) [BOOM]

BTW – Dick Smackers is like the worst lip gloss flavor ever.

Female Directors

One of the biggest problems is that when we sit down and try to think of female directors, we could each come up with maybe four, and several of those we can’t even think of their names, we just know the movie. This is a serious problem, especially when one of the biggest female director in the industry can’t be mentioned without saying “ex-wife of James Cameron.” And if a female had two shit movies in a row, you would NEVER hear from them again. Unlike Zac Snyder and is shitstorm of crap movies getting one of the biggest franchises out there.

Here is the clip that Liz was talking about from Patton Oswalt’s Talking for Clapping standup

Ask a Nerdy Bitch - Part 1

Ask a Nerdy Bitch – Part 1

We wanted to take some time to answer some questions asked to us by friends, listeners, and fellow podcasters. We did not prep the answers before sitting down together, so our answers are pretty spontaneous. We will shout out to each person in this episode!

  • The Cutaways Podcast (Ashley & Justine)
  • The Nerdery (JD)
  • Ofelia (previous guest)
  • Mindfudge Podcast (Justin – formerly of Comical Podcast; currently with Graybear Comics)

We spent a lot of time on each of these questions, so we ended up splitting the episode up into two parts so that we could give these the attention they needed without having a crazy-long episode.

Goodreads

Are you using the Goodreads app to track your reading? They have an optional reading challenge where you can challenge yourself to read and track a certain number of books per year. It’s a good app if you are a big reader.

Random quotes and rants flow, as always. Read instructions before asking your wife. Read them again and try it yourself before asking your wife. She will appreciate it. And think you are smarter.

Not so great expectations

Episode 60: Not So Great Expectations

Happy New Year! 2016 was a total bitch, and not in a good way like we are. In this episode, we talk about the not so great expectations of being a girl, and also provide a memorial on the late Carrie Fisher.

Not so great expectations

In Memory of Carrie Fisher…

We recorded the actual episode before Christmas, so when we woke up to the news that Carrie Fisher, our beloved Princess Leia, had died a few days after a heart attack. It was really devastating. Liz wrote about it on her blog, so you can read that here, but this was our recognition of an amazing woman who was an actor, an advocate for the mentally ill, and a fantastic writer. The day after, her mother, Debbie Reynolds, also died. So much tragedy in such a short time. Prayers for Gary Fisher. You can’t explain death to a dog. Let the love of Carrie carry us forward into DOING something, rather than waiting for things to happen. Let’s make the world a better place.

Moving on…

Not So Great Expectations

Heather loves day-drinking, especially at a festival. And the drunk texts from her during these events are also amazingly weird. But we want to talk about what it’s like being a girl when you aren’t really a “girly girl” and aren’t meeting up to expectations – ours or the world’s. First of all, just because we don’t always want to be girly doesn’t mean we want to be dudes. Get over your “penis envy” comments just because we don’t feel like doing our hair or makeup every day.

Story about Speedos. Just… don’t. Also, New Year’s Resolutions… stop. Stop hating yourself when you don’t meet these flighty goals. Make real goals and work on them. We talk about some goals that we have made over the years to better ourselves that aren’t just short-term goals.

The expectations we put on ourselves are often harder than the ones society imposes. We always assumed that we would be more put-together as adult women. And we judged, growing up, the moms/women who weren’t. We imagined that at some age, we would wake up and get our shit together. Still waiting…

Listen in to the rest.

Note: This is the “comfy” bra Operaman brought Liz when we went out and forgot to put one on…

  • Ham – Will feed you for-ever.

  • Chicken Fried Steak (Hey, it’s Texas, y’all)
  • Tamales

Traditions – Holiday Music

Hello, Sunny 99.1 who starts playing exclusively Christmas music the week of Thanksgiving through the end of the year. Drinking games revolving around Christmas music in the car are not advisable by Nerdy Bitches Podcast. We will not be responsible for your DUI.

  • Holly Jolly Christmas
  • Trans Siberian Orchestra – Carol of the Bells
  • Jingle Bell Rock
  • Old-School Christmas CDs from the 90s, including A Very Special Christmas
Traditions – Gift Giving Tips

Warnings for new couples – don’t give your SO something sexual, trips, hotels, etc. It’s awkward. Lingerie is NOT a gift for a woman…everyone knows its for you. Your dick is NOT a gift. The naughty should only be a part of something bigger. So, think ahead and try not to run someone off by being a weirdo.

  • Gift cards
  • Stocking stuffers (Candy, little special things, As Seen on TV things, etc.)
  • For friends in small homes/apartments – unitaskers take up too much room. Be mindful of their space issues.
  • Amazon Wish Lists are awesome. If you don’t have one, get one. It makes things much easier for those people who want to get you a gift.
What the Fuck is an Elf on the Shelf??

Santa sends the elf Thanksgiving night to spy on the children and report back each night to Santa on whether or not they are being naughty or nice. Some elves are more naught and mischievous than others. We are perplexed by this whole business.

2016 Netflix Originals Part 2

2016 Netflix Originals Part 2

We have decided that there should be Netflix for pets. But, since there isn’t currently, we can only talk about the one for peoples. So, here is the rest of 2016.

  • Orange is the New Black – We don’t care for the main characters, but Red is awesome. Also an interesting look at the difference between private and public prison institutions. Just look what happened to Luke Cage!
  • Voltron: Legendary Defender – Absolutely excellent! Completely worth the watch, especially if you aren’t into other areas of anime. Season 2 will be out in January 2017.
  • BoJack Horsemen – BoJack has issues. The animal jokes throughout are funny.
  • Stranger Things – This show is crazy good. The 1980s nostalgia alone is worth the watch. Mystery/thriller/sci-fi that really represents the 80s. It’s dark and gritty. We talk about the differences between the disappearances of Will and Barb and the importance of an active imagination. We go in depth with the different characters and actors on this one.
  • Luke Cage – Damn. He is hot. Aside from the hotness, this show is really good. Definitely one to check out and binge. Long discussion here.
  • Black Mirror – Totally fucked up, so it may take some time to get into. Kind of like your Klout score becoming your net worth.
  • Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life – A 4 part 90-min series catching up on what happened since we last visited Stars Hollow.
