Book Club: Felicia Day

Episode 70 – Book Club: Felicia Day

In this episode, Liz and Heather sit down for Book Club: Felicia Day (You’re Never Weird on the Internet, Almost). We are super excited since this author, actress, and all around nerdy phenomenon will be attending Comicpalooza here in Houston May 12-14 at the George R. Brown Convention Center!

Book Club: Felicia Day

Book Club: Felicia Day

In this book, Felicia talks about her weird (her words!) childhood, schooling, and talent and how they led her to become the awesome nerd we all know and love today. If she looks familiar, you have probably seen her in Supernatural, Eureka, Doctor Horrible’s Sing-a-long Blog, and ALL over the internet! She pretty much invented the web series with The Guild! This is definitely a must-read book for geek girls out there. She also talks about her own experience after gamer gate and how she came back from that stronger.

Robots and cyborgs and droids oh my

Episode 67 – Robots and Cyborgs and Droids, Oh My!!

Robots and Cyborgs and Droids Oh My!! In this episode, Heather and Liz discuss their favorite near-human companions throughout sci-fi and fantasy! Join us as we hit our favorites throughout our favorite fandoms.

Robots and cyborgs and droids oh my

Robots and Cyborgs and Droids, Oh My!!

This may be our most mansplained episode ever, so we will see how that goes along. A robot is a machine that does the job of a human. An android is a robot is generally made to look like a human. Cyborgs have organic material mixed with mechanical stuff.

[We are not talking bout Roombas and robot maids and sex bots, though we do actually talk about a few of those things. Vacuums totally blow, by the way.]

We took a quiz to see which Star Wars droids we are. Liz got K-2SO and Heather got BB-8. We would like to see a buddy movie made with those two, so someone get on that! We go on a bit of a tangent regarding introverts vs. extroverts. Shout out to our new friends at Serves You Right podcast!

The Star Wars universe is chock full of droids, and these are mostly our favorites. C-3PO, R2-D2, BB-8, K-2SO.

We also went through literature, music, film, and TV.

Music:

  • Mr. Roboto by Styx

Literature:

  • Tik Tok from Return to Oz (1907)
  • Marvin the Paranoid Android (Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy)

Film:

  • Ash (Alien) / Bishop (Aliens)
  • Boobo – Clash of the Titans
  • T-800 from Terminator
  • Beta (Alex Rogan replacement) from The Last Starfighter

Episode 63 – Beating Winter Blues

In this episode, Liz and Heather discuss beating winter blues, especially in Houston where it isn’t generally cold much in the winter time.

Beating Winter Blues

Beating Winter Blues

Even though we don’t really get snowed in or have super cold days here, we can still get the winter blues. Especially on overcast, cold, and clammy (humid) days. Also, the time change in the winter really messes with your head and biorhythms. It makes you feel tired and grumpy. It does lead to a lot of binge watching and binge eating.

How to Beat the Blahs

  • Embrace it, if you can – Pretend you are choosing to spend the cold day in bed so that you can really enjoy the day.
  • Keep Warm – There are certain things that we want to do in winter, like hot chocolate, soups and stews, giant blankets. You may have to flip on the AC for this activity if you live in Houston.
  • Find the light – Get outside and find the sun, wherever it may be. Watch out for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which comes from a lack of Vitamin D. This can boost your mood and help you keep a little more active.
  • Pokemon Go will overheat your phone and keep your hands warm.
  • Eating healthy – When most of us binge watch and binge eat, you aren’t doing it with healthy foods. Try to get the foods in season and go to town.
  • Lighting (in doors) – Open the blinds and let in some light.
  • Make some kind of plans – You have the chance to catch up on things you have been meaning to do. Forget your resolutions and goals and make a PLAN and work the plan. Try not to isolate yourself. Go out and see people when you can.
  • Know your limitations – Don’t over-commit when you know it won’t be good for you. Do what you can do, plan for the things that take more time than you have. Get a day planner and keep track of what you need to do and make adjustments as you see things crowding up.
  • Find a hobby – Figure out what you like to do and make some time to do it. Puzzles, coloring, etc.
  • One Day at a Time – Just get through the day. Live in the moment. Life is much more manageable if you stay present. Mindfulness.
  • Talk it Through – Lean on your support system. Talk to someone who will listen and not judge or try to solve your problems. Make these relationships a two-way street. Don’t just dump all of your crap on someone and never allow them to do the same. If you can’t find a person to trust – get a journal. NEVER go back and read those journals.

Time Travel

Episode 62 – Time Travel

In this episode, Heather and Liz talk time travel in entertainment (but not real science, so don’t tell us we don’t know science – because we already know that).

Time Travel

Time Travel

We are discussing time travel in TV and movies. Since we don’t have Dr. Neil Degrass Tyson on the show (but we would LOVE to), we won’t be talking the actual physics/science behind the potential for time travel, or even things like wormholes. We are sticking to what we can Google and what we can see in entertainment.

Time Travel Theories
  1. Fixed timeline – Single fixed history which is unchangeable. Whatever you go back and try to change will be what created it in the first place. Examples: 12 Monkeys and Donnie Darko.
  2. Dynamic timeline – Very small change in the past has a huge impact on the future (Butterfly effect or chaos theory). Example: Back to the Future. Paradox: Grandfather paradox – If you go back in time and kill your grandfather and thus you should never be born, but the fact that YOU went back in time means that you existed and the grandpa can’t be killed.
  3. Multi-verse – Every change you make creates a new timeline. Example: Doctor Who, The Flash
  4. Trapped in time – Time is paused and they will rejoin the timeline. Example: Jumanji, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me; Planet of the Apes (1968).

Bootstrap Paradox: occurs when an object or piece of information sent back in time becomes trapped within an infinite cause-effect loop in which the item no longer has a discernible point of origin, and is said to be “uncaused” or “self-created”.

Wormhole – Often used as a method for time travel

Time Travel – in TV

  • Doctor Who
  • Quantum Leap
  • Legends of Tomorrow
  • Agents of Shield (ish)
  • Continum

Time Travel – in Movies

  • Back to the Future
  • Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure
  • Groundhog Day*
  • Interstellar
  • Terminator
  • Time Bandits
  • Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
  • Butterfly Effect
  • Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
  • X-Men Days of Future Past
  • Flight of the Navigator
  • 13 Going on 30

Not so great expectations

Episode 60: Not So Great Expectations

Happy New Year! 2016 was a total bitch, and not in a good way like we are. In this episode, we talk about the not so great expectations of being a girl, and also provide a memorial on the late Carrie Fisher.

Not so great expectations

In Memory of Carrie Fisher…

We recorded the actual episode before Christmas, so when we woke up to the news that Carrie Fisher, our beloved Princess Leia, had died a few days after a heart attack. It was really devastating. Liz wrote about it on her blog, so you can read that here, but this was our recognition of an amazing woman who was an actor, an advocate for the mentally ill, and a fantastic writer. The day after, her mother, Debbie Reynolds, also died. So much tragedy in such a short time. Prayers for Gary Fisher. You can’t explain death to a dog. Let the love of Carrie carry us forward into DOING something, rather than waiting for things to happen. Let’s make the world a better place.

Moving on…

Not So Great Expectations

Heather loves day-drinking, especially at a festival. And the drunk texts from her during these events are also amazingly weird. But we want to talk about what it’s like being a girl when you aren’t really a “girly girl” and aren’t meeting up to expectations – ours or the world’s. First of all, just because we don’t always want to be girly doesn’t mean we want to be dudes. Get over your “penis envy” comments just because we don’t feel like doing our hair or makeup every day.

Story about Speedos. Just… don’t. Also, New Year’s Resolutions… stop. Stop hating yourself when you don’t meet these flighty goals. Make real goals and work on them. We talk about some goals that we have made over the years to better ourselves that aren’t just short-term goals.

The expectations we put on ourselves are often harder than the ones society imposes. We always assumed that we would be more put-together as adult women. And we judged, growing up, the moms/women who weren’t. We imagined that at some age, we would wake up and get our shit together. Still waiting…

Listen in to the rest.

Note: This is the “comfy” bra Operaman brought Liz when we went out and forgot to put one on…

2016 Netflix Originals Part 2

2016 Netflix Originals Part 2

We have decided that there should be Netflix for pets. But, since there isn’t currently, we can only talk about the one for peoples. So, here is the rest of 2016.

  • Orange is the New Black – We don’t care for the main characters, but Red is awesome. Also an interesting look at the difference between private and public prison institutions. Just look what happened to Luke Cage!
  • Voltron: Legendary Defender – Absolutely excellent! Completely worth the watch, especially if you aren’t into other areas of anime. Season 2 will be out in January 2017.
  • BoJack Horsemen – BoJack has issues. The animal jokes throughout are funny.
  • Stranger Things – This show is crazy good. The 1980s nostalgia alone is worth the watch. Mystery/thriller/sci-fi that really represents the 80s. It’s dark and gritty. We talk about the differences between the disappearances of Will and Barb and the importance of an active imagination. We go in depth with the different characters and actors on this one.
  • Luke Cage – Damn. He is hot. Aside from the hotness, this show is really good. Definitely one to check out and binge. Long discussion here.
  • Black Mirror – Totally fucked up, so it may take some time to get into. Kind of like your Klout score becoming your net worth.
  • Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life – A 4 part 90-min series catching up on what happened since we last visited Stars Hollow.

Be sure to leave us a 5-star review on iTunes or wherever. Because we are awesome.

Episode 57 – 2016 Netflix Originals Part 1

In this episode, Liz and Heather discuss all of the 2016 Netflix Originals Part 1 that we have seen or heard good things about. Sit back and enjoy the first part, as we blab way too much for a single episode.

2016 Netflix Originals Part 1

We are also drinking on this episode – Fireball whiskey + Cream soda = Delicious! Plus a random discussion about coffee.

2016 Netflix Originals Part 1

  • Fuller House – Definitely worth the watch if you were a fan of the original series back in the 90s or in the last two decades as it has run in syndication.
  • Daredevil (Season 2) – Marvel has done an awesome job on these Netflix episodes because they can do so much in this format that can’t be done on network TV.
  • PeeWee’s Big Holiday – Same personality as back in the day, so check it out. Totally makes you forget about him jerking off in a movie theater.
  • Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Season 2) – So freaking funny. Enough said.
  • Patton Oswalt’s Talking for Clapping (stand-up comedy special) – So unbelievably funny. He is delightful. Also recommended: Lady Dynamite. Also, check out the College Humor series of BadMan (a take on Batman) – Patton Oswalt plays the Penguin and it’s awesome.
  • House of Cards – Creepy and awesome.
  • Grace and Frankie – Meh. This one had high hopes, but hasn’t really thrilled me yet.
