Book Club: Felicia Day

Episode 70 – Book Club: Felicia Day

In this episode, Liz and Heather sit down for Book Club: Felicia Day (You’re Never Weird on the Internet, Almost). We are super excited since this author, actress, and all around nerdy phenomenon will be attending Comicpalooza here in Houston May 12-14 at the George R. Brown Convention Center!

Book Club: Felicia Day

Book Club: Felicia Day

In this book, Felicia talks about her weird (her words!) childhood, schooling, and talent and how they led her to become the awesome nerd we all know and love today. If she looks familiar, you have probably seen her in Supernatural, Eureka, Doctor Horrible’s Sing-a-long Blog, and ALL over the internet! She pretty much invented the web series with The Guild! This is definitely a must-read book for geek girls out there. She also talks about her own experience after gamer gate and how she came back from that stronger.

We spend a good amount of time discussing this movie – all of our favorite parts, lines, and gaping plot holes. But we really do love it! The show is nearly as long as the movie!

We go through each of the two-fers in the season and then talk about the new writer and whomever the new Doctor might be. We loved that they brought back Missy for the first few episodes. She is a great villain and we love her.

Upcoming Book Club…

Felicia will be at Comicpalooza this year, so we have our fingers crossed that we will get to meet her and maybe even get her on the podcast! So, get to reading! And feel free to tweet her and let her know to look for us!

Episode 42 – Comicpalooza 2016

In this episode, Liz and Heather wrap up our coverage of Comicpalooza 2016. We are completely exhausted after the con, but had such an awesome time participating and being on the podcast program team this year!

Comicpalooza Podcast Program 2016

Wrap Up

  • We were invited by our friends at Sarah and Cassi’s Nerdy Adventure to participate in their Women in Podcasting panel Friday afternoon. This panel was so much fun! We worked with Sarah & Cassi, Jenny from I Love Flavor, and Mandy from Caster Quest. We talked about being women in the male-dominated world of podcasting, how to start your own podcast, and lessons we have learned since starting.
  • We believe the con should be any time other than June, because in Houston, it is hotter than the face of the sun. Thank everything for air conditioning!
  • We had a good time passing out our podcasting stickers and getting new people interested in the podcast. Then, we met these guys…

Predator vs Bitches Sailor Moon Gender Bend

  • That Predator guy’s mask clicked just like in the movie! It was really cool and a little terrifying! We also loved the gender-bending Sailor Moon! It was so much fun to see everyone dressed up and people were so nice and always willing to take a picture!
  • We attended Cult 45: The Movie Podcast’s live podcast show! We love these guys!! We are looking forward to doing some kind of cross-over show with them. They are our new best friends… and we LOVE Brandon’s wife Carla! Call us! 🙂
  • We also attended the Aliens Q&A, which was fantastic. We wish it would have been twice as long because with a large panel, you don’t get very far with the questions. Also, Bill Paxton totes made eye contact with Liz. She is sticking to that story.
  • We attended the Business of Podcasting panel with our own Producer Craig, along with a lot of other people who run awesome podcasts. Ming Chen was also on this panel and it was great getting to meet him.
  • Heather made it to the Boondock Saints Q&A, which was short one Norman Reedus. Sean Patrick Flannery was all sorts of hot and dirty. Good times.
  • Con Crud is a real thing. Many people feel bad now after being around so much.

Coming Up

We were thrilled to be a part of this show and are really looking forward to next year! Now, we will be returning to our regular format and will be covering our Book Club on World War Z (Max Brooks), a superhero movie catch up (Deadpool, Captain America: Civil War, and X-Men: Apocolypse), and we will also be having some brand new guests that we met at the con!

Make sure you are following us on Twitter (@nerdybitchespod), Instagram (@nerdybitches), Pinterest (@nerdybitches), and Facebook (Nerdy Bitches Podcast).

Episode 40 – Classic Movie Club Alien/Aliens

In this episode, Liz and Heather introduce their very first Classic Movie Club: Alien/Aliens in preparation for the upcoming 30th anniversary Aliens cast reunion at Comicpalooza 2016 June 17 – 19. Classic Movie Club Alien Aliens

We are combining both Alien and Aliens in this review. We are looking forward to other Classic Movie Clubs in the future.

Classic Movie Club Alien Aliens

Alien

Released in 1979. This movie was pretty tense, and we can see this at the time being scary as shit. There was so much tension and claustrophobia in this movie – It’s a capsule in space…nowhere to go. The feeling of being trapped is probably the deepest human fear. These movies force you to face the fear since there is no escape.

We watched the two movies back-to-back and it was very interesting to see the difference both the Director and script can make.

One of the main antagonists in Alien is the computer – Mother. Also, Ian Holm’s character turns out to be a robot, and they didn’t know he was a robot (and the robot goes nuts). The robot has a directive that the main goal is to get the alien – crew expendable. “Holy blinking lights!” – Heather. They had a pretty awesome light bulb budget. If you have photo epileptic seizures, you may want to skip this one.

The Alien – that shit escalated quickly! It went from Face Hugger to penis with teeth to massive monster in a matter of hours. It was also ONE monster, rather than a bunch. It almost makes it scarier, because you just don’t know where it is.

Self destruct sequence – This is the most complex self-destruction sequence we have ever seen. And then, there is no way to cancel it. They should change that. This has inspired some of the favorite things that pop up in other movies – like the self-destruct sequence in Spaceballs.

Cryo – Why does Ripley have to get in with only porn panties? Can you not go into deep sleep in a jumpsuit? Also, she is the only one to make it out of the first movie, which is tragic. At the end of the second movie, she will be the only one to get out. From an HR perspective, they are going to start thinking it’s her.

None of this would have happened if John Hurt could have kept his damn balance.

Classic Movie Club Alien Aliens

Aliens

Released 1986 – The premise here is that Ripley’s escape pod has been found 58 years after the fact. The cat is also still alive, so probably the oldest cat on record. Now, Ripley has been found by “the company” and has been asked to go back to this planet as a consultant under the agreement that they would NOT be trying to get any of the aliens off the planet, but to rescue the 70 families that were now living on the teraformed planet. The company has a giant military presence in order to make this happen.

James Cameron tends to use the same actors in all of his movies, so we recognize these people, but they don’t have enough personality to form a connection with. We were kind of rooting for the aliens over the humans, since the humans were just annoying stereotypes. We are talking to you, Bill Paxton. We LOVE you, but for all of the 1980s, you played nothing but whiny bitch characters.

We thought originally that Paul Reisser’s character was going to be the romantic interest, but fortunately that didn’t happen. More so, he turned out to be a rapist. Then, there is the character of Newt. We really like this, but it’s almost like they couldn’t get Ripley into action unless she had a child to mother, and then she would start lactating, and save the day. It felt manipulative. They also trained her on a 2-minute instruction on how to shoot a gun, but when Newt goes missing, she duct tapes two guns together and goes hunting. They could have made her a badass, but it just didn’t have enough build up.

We didn’t find either of the movies scary. Maybe if we watched it back in the day it would have been, but we now see things that are so much more graphic that this didn’t hold up in the scary-genre. Aliens was a decent action movie, but there were a lot of things that could have been different.

Classic Movie Club Alien Aliens

Come find us at Comicpalooza June 17 – 19! We will be at the Aliens panel for sure, and will also be participating in a Women in Podcasting panel on Friday, the 17th.

ComicCon Pre

Episode 39 – ComicCon Prep

In this episode, Liz and Heather talk about ComicCon Prep for the upcoming comic con season. This is also our first official episode to talk about our participation in the 2016 Comicpalooza Podcast Partnership Program! You can follow our information on Twitter and Instagram and stuff at #Comicpalooza #CPPodFam #CPHOU and #CPHTX.

ComicCom Prep

This will be Liz’s first convention, so Heather will school everyone on how to do the cons well. The one thing that separates this kind of con from the classic “flea market comic book show” that we may have seen on The Simpsons is really the celebrity guests, and most of them will interact with the con-goers, which is awesome.

So, here are some things you need to know to be prepared.

  • Download the convention app – Make sure you check the schedule often and keep up with the changes, in case there is a change in location/time.
  • Ways to see celebrities: Sign up to get an autograph (paid) or a picture (also paid), but also the celebrity Q & As (moderated panels).
  • Visit the Dealer Room often! They sell everything you can think of. Think about bringing a wheeled bag because shit gets heavy over time. Also make sure to visit Artist Alley. This is where we met Sarita Ackerman last year, who generously donated her amazing portrait of Wonder Woman that we raffled off last year.Sarita Ackerman - artist
  • Think about getting a hotel room if you live far enough away because you have a place to stash your stuff, but you also have somewhere to crash.
  • Buy your passes early! And if you think you only want to go to one or two days, think about buying the three-day pass because you really get the most bang for your buck.

What to expect:

  • There are going to be a LOT of people there. Be prepared to stand in lines. Lots of lines. And the Q&A lines start very early.
  • LOTS of walking. Wear comfortable shoes. Remember to wear your activity tracker! (Liz’s recommendation for those looking for an alternative to a fitbit – the Spire. It tracks your emotional health based on respiration, in case you have some anxiety or panic issues, it can help calm you down before it gets into a massive issue.
  • Be on the lookout for quiet rooms or areas where you may be able to sit and take a rest if you tend to get overwhelmed. Bring some earbuds to zone out.
  • There will be little kids there, so be sure to notice how adorable they are.

Dos and Don’t

  • DO: Comfortable shoes
  • DO: Bandaids (for blisters)
  • DO: Cross-shoulder/messenger bag to carry things around so that you have open hands.
  • DO: Check for off-site activities. There could be several activities that take place as a group after the main con concludes for the day.
  • DO: Go on Friday, even if its later. The lines for tickets will be shorter.
  • DO: Make friends! You will be sitting in line and chatting with people! Talk to the cosplayers and appreciate their costumes.
  • DO: Go early
  • DO: Get the multi-day pass, even if you only go two days (usually cheaper and it is a lot cheaper).
  • DO: Go to headliner Q&As early! They will fill up quickly.
  • DON’T: Make fun of other people. People have put a lot of time and money into this.
  • DON’t: get frustrated. It’s easy to get annoyed, but most of these people are volunteers and they are don’t the best they can.
  • DON’T be a dick.

You will have to pay for parking. The cons in Texas are all on the lightrail lines, so plan it out. If you go early, you can park in the Discovery Green underground parking, or if you are staying at the hotel, so you can park though there (again, paid).

We are looking so forward to getting out into the people and we will be passing out our Nerdy Bitches podcast stickers and perhaps some other giveaways…So be on the look out for both Liz and Heather! We will be Tweeting/Facebooking/Instagramming out way through.

Discovery Green across the street had a lunch place by the lake. On the East side of the convention center, the parking is cheaper over there. Lucky’s pub is close by and a good place to eat, along with several other eateries. But, the NERDOM place is Neil’s Bahr – The geekiest bar in town (no food), but lots of games, comics, and you will probably see all of the podcast folks hanging out there. Some of the celebs might also be there.. who knows?

Episode 36 – Book Club: Lamb

In this episode, Liz and Heather talk about our most recent Book Club: Lamb by Christopher Moore. We LOVE THIS BOOK. It is so funny and also makes you think. Here is the disclaimer – if you are super starchy religious or have a stick up your ass, you may want to skip that episode.

Book Club: Lamb

The Book

Note: Donkey and Goat Wine is what Heather is talking about – fermented natural wine that tastes like grape juice. Check it out.

We will soon be adding a Classic Movie Club to our podcast, in addition to our Book Clubs. Our first movies will be Alien/Aliens since there will be a reunion of Aliens at Comicpalooza in Houston in June.

Here’e the plot of the book: The angel Raziel has come back 2,000 years after the death of Christ and has brought back Biff, Jesus’ childhood pal, to tell his Gospel – the 30 year gap in what happened to Jesus (Joshua) from about age 6 until his death. Biff is locked in a hotel room, writing his version of events of the day. Since Joshua is supposed to be the Messiah and is to be without sin, he gets Biff to do the sinning for him, and then tell him about it later. They also have their childhood friend, Mary Magdalene (Maggie) to contend with. She is in love with Joshua and Biff is in love with Maggie… good times.

Joshua and Biff go on an epic journey throughout the land searching for the three magi who were present at his birth to try to learn how to be the Messiah; Balthazar, Gaspar, and Melchior are there names.

Lots of love, sinning, sex, Bible stuff, and more. Read it, listen to it, and listen to us. Because this is cool Jesus. And we like cool Jesus. Trust us, yo.

Intro to Anime

Episode 37 – Intro to Anime

In this episode, Liz and Heather welcome some new guests into the studio for an intro to anime! We brought Ofelia (she drew our podcast photos) and Eileen to teach us a little more about why people like anime and what we should look into. Both Ofelia and Eileen have great stories about anime influencing their lives.

Doggies

{Artwork by Ofelia!}

Our questions – What the hell is anime and why should we dig it? Their answer: Art!

– What is the difference between anime and manga?

Some that Heather and I watched: Desert Punk, Black Butler, Attack on Titan, Cowboy BeBop… we are still exploring.

Anime seemed to pick up steam in America back in the 90s. There are a lot of great conventions (ACON) for anime.

We love the use of color that is way over the top compared to American animation.

Listen in for the rest of this episode, as our amazing guests have a lot to say about the wonders of anime!

Recommended shows for newbies – There are so many categories to choose from. Do your research to find your favorites. Samauri 7 (historical), Attack on Titan, Honey and Clover, DeathNote (psychological), Full Metal Alchemist (emotional)

Bitch of the Week – Kids who spoil the holiday secrets for other kids. This makes Liz go all aunt-zilla. It’s just mean, and I blame their parents for not making sure they don’t do this. It isn’t right and it isn’t fair to crap all over someone else’s beliefs. This goes for anyone trying to “clue people in” to what is “true.” Fuck you.

Follow us on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest.

Also check out our upcoming episodes as we head toward Comicpalooza! We are part of the Comicpalooza Podcast Partnership Program this year and are really looking forward to it! We will be doing several episodes directly related to the con, so keep up with us in the coming weeks!
