Episode 60: Not So Great Expectations

Happy New Year! 2016 was a total bitch, and not in a good way like we are. In this episode, we talk about the not so great expectations of being a girl, and also provide a memorial on the late Carrie Fisher.

Not so great expectations

In Memory of Carrie Fisher…

We recorded the actual episode before Christmas, so when we woke up to the news that Carrie Fisher, our beloved Princess Leia, had died a few days after a heart attack. It was really devastating. Liz wrote about it on her blog, so you can read that here, but this was our recognition of an amazing woman who was an actor, an advocate for the mentally ill, and a fantastic writer. The day after, her mother, Debbie Reynolds, also died. So much tragedy in such a short time. Prayers for Gary Fisher. You can’t explain death to a dog. Let the love of Carrie carry us forward into DOING something, rather than waiting for things to happen. Let’s make the world a better place.

Moving on…

Not So Great Expectations

Heather loves day-drinking, especially at a festival. And the drunk texts from her during these events are also amazingly weird. But we want to talk about what it’s like being a girl when you aren’t really a “girly girl” and aren’t meeting up to expectations – ours or the world’s. First of all, just because we don’t always want to be girly doesn’t mean we want to be dudes. Get over your “penis envy” comments just because we don’t feel like doing our hair or makeup every day.

Story about Speedos. Just… don’t. Also, New Year’s Resolutions… stop. Stop hating yourself when you don’t meet these flighty goals. Make real goals and work on them. We talk about some goals that we have made over the years to better ourselves that aren’t just short-term goals.

The expectations we put on ourselves are often harder than the ones society imposes. We always assumed that we would be more put-together as adult women. And we judged, growing up, the moms/women who weren’t. We imagined that at some age, we would wake up and get our shit together. Still waiting…

Listen in to the rest.

Note: This is the “comfy” bra Operaman brought Liz when we went out and forgot to put one on…

It is! Because nothing is more adorable than a one-year old with the world’s most annoying instrument!! And it is adorable… at first…
