Doctor Who Season 9

Just a note – This is actually our second recording, but we lost the first one, so just know, you missed the Oscar-worthy edition. But, this is finally our chance to get around to talking about Season 9 and how much we really enjoyed it… even Clara (who we typically hated)!!

We go through each of the two-fers in the season and then talk about the new writer and whomever the new Doctor might be. We loved that they brought back Missy for the first few episodes. She is a great villain and we love her.

Upcoming Book Club…

You’re Never Weird on the Internet (Almost) by Felicia Day!

Felicia will be at Comicpalooza this year, so we have our fingers crossed that we will get to meet her and maybe even get her on the podcast! So, get to reading! And feel free to tweet her and let her know to look for us!

Be The Match Booth at Comicpalooza

Be the Match swabs people for the National Bone Marrow Registry, and they will have a booth at Comicpalooza this year, and Liz wants YOU to get over there and swab to see if you could possibly be the match for 2 year old Roman. (join.bethematch.org/teamroman) It’s really for anyone who could possibly need a bone marrow transplant, so get out there and be a hero, with or without a cape! <3 How can you resist this face???

Episode 24 – Peter Capaldi as The Doctor

On this episode, Heather and Liz talk about Peter Capaldi as The Doctor. This is the 12th doctor (or is he the 13th, with the edition of the War doctor), and our 4th doctor in the new series.

We compare him to previous doctors, including Matt Smith, who is the Labrador of the Doctor Who series. We are also desperate to see River Song come back (and she will at Christmas!).

Capaldi’s Doctor is the grumpy doctor we had to kind of grow to love. He is so different from the previous doctors, so it took a little time for the fans (and Clara, as his companion) to warm up. He doesn’t ask for permission or approval from the humans – he just gets it done. He has a little glint in his eye that shows he cares, but he isn’t outwardly cuddly.

We also really love Capaldi as an actor. We have seen him in several other things, and he is fantastic. If you want to see him in something adorable, check him out in Paddington as the nosy neighbor.

*Random note – We will be creating a new geek cocktail – Sex on a TARDIS.

FYI – We are pretty much over Clara and are ready for her run to end. Her character has finally gotten a little better, but since she is leaving, we know something is going to happen. We are also still wondering what the hell happened to the kid that Danny Pink sent back from death. And how they ran across Danny’s descendant in the future. Did Clara get pregnant and we haven’t seen that? Was it that kid that she raised? We just don’t know. Is it lazy writing, or will we get the answer two doctors from now?

How do you feel about the switch from Matt Smith to Peter Capaldi? Matt Smith is like a cute baby animal, where as Capaldi is a grumpy cat barn owl.

We had zero bitches this week, so good happy week for the Bitches.

Recommendation:

  • Heather: The Nerdist on Comedy Central at midnight
  • Liz: Fresh Off the Boat (ABC)

Episode 4 – The Doctor’s Companions

Spoilers… In episode 4, we talk about Doctor Who companions. companions

We focus on the reboot of Doctor Who, starting with the 9th Doctor, in 2005. Companions covered are:

  • Rose Tyler
  • Captain Jack Harkness
  • Mickey
  • Donna Noble
  • Sarah Jane Smith
  • Amy & Rory (“The Ponds”)
  • River Song/Melody Pond
  • Craig Owen (only in 2 episodes, but we love him!)
  • Clara Oswald (in all her iterations)

We discuss our favorites and least favorites companions throughout the series. We love River Song. She is the number one on both of our lists. We also love Captain Jack! The Ponds also made it to our favorites list. Donna Noble makes the list in our favorite for all of her snark, wit, and personality.

Donna wins our vote for the saddest ending for any companion.

Our Most Hated Least Favorites – Mickey (the Tin Dog!), Martha Jones (UGH!), Clara (Booooring!), and early Rose Tyler (we liked her better going forward).

We also talk a bit about the show’s writers, including a slight debate regarding Russell T. Davies vs. Steven Moffett. Who writes the cheesier episodes? Who writes the best day-to-day shows versus big plot twists?

What is the point of the companion for the Doctor? Why does he need them and what do they bring to the table for a Time Lord?

Feed the Troll – from Sunderland56 – “To be fair, if she had two female parents, and no male in the house, How would she learn to drive?” … Seriously?

Out of Context Comment of the Week – from YouTube – Braden says, “Likes dogs and cats.” That is definitely a controversial topic… ??

Bitch of the Week – High School Reunions – WTF? Why is it 6 months too early? Where the hell did the time go? This is not ok. Do you feel like a grown-up? We still don’t. But we are old.  And it sucks.  The End.
